US VP Harris Hosts Kim Kardashian to Discuss Criminal Justice Reform

Source: US News and World Report/Reuters

April 25, 2024, at 1:00 p.m.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris hosted reality-television star Kim Kardashian at the White House on Thursday to discuss criminal justice reform, after the Biden administration granted clemency to people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses. On Wednesday, President Joe Biden granted clemency to 16 people, pardoning 11 of them and commuting the sentences of the other five. Four of the recipients joined Thursday's event.

Harris is focused on convincing people of color and young voters to give Biden and her a second, four-year term at a time many voters are dissatisfied with their handling of the economy, persistent inflation and the war in Gaza. The United States imprisons more people than any other country. Some one in five of those 1.9 million people are behind bars for a drug-related offense.

Black and Latino people are disproportionately incarcerated, and drug law reform has the broadest support among young voters. Black, Latino and young voters tend to favor Democrats. "Everybody makes mistakes, and for some that might rise to the level of being a crime," Harris said at the White House. "But is it not the sign of a civil society that we allow people a way to earn their way back and give them the support and the resources they need to do that?"

Harris, a former prosecutor, planned to announce the finalization of a Small Business Administration rule that will remove most restrictions on loan eligibility based on a person's criminal record, White House officials said. Kardashian, who is also an entrepreneur, first became a vocal activist for criminal justice reform during former President Donald Trump's administration. Harris praised her work.

Everyone on reality TV shows is Republican because Trump was? All rich people have to be right-wing Republicans, it's a law of nature? Entertainers are all idiots and can't be activists? I especially like her Teen Vogue (cue condescension for fashion publications, even though Anna Wintour is a Democrat) article about why she was voting for Hillary in 2016.

She'd just talked to her Republican step-father and said something to the press about being undecided (even though she'd been a Hillary admirer for years), got some push back. Looked at both party platforms and decided that Democratic goals were best for her. A simple thing. Look at the party platforms and decide which is best for you. A great message! I don't think many people did that. I remember the day after the election ABC's David Muir showed the two party platforms side by side and that was the first time I saw it on the news.

Think. Again.

WTH would Kim K really know about this? She studied it or just says she did? I certainly was not amused by Trump using her. Was it because she wrote letters or some silly notion that that made her smart or Trump just looking for a little sumpin sumpin?

This IS a bad look. Tay Tay can take it, I hardly think she needs to worry about much. I can't take it. She may not be as dumb as I think she is but until now I thought the only thing she was good at was demeaning women, undressing, calling as much attention to herself and being a Republican.

Ms. Kardashian has more to gain than MVP does from the association.

I don't care if Ms. Kardashian claims to be a Democrat or not. It's a secret ballot. One can say anything then change up once they are in the voting booth. I don't trust her to be anything more than self-involved.

It certainly raises her status by association much more than it raises the status of VP Harris.

You just don't invite yourself to these things and the VP doesn't showcase celebrities if she doesn't want them there.

They probably know each other going way back.

Kim likes doing this and apparently does a good job...so whatever....

If I felt Kim was a political albatross, I would not have invited her, but I guess Kamala felt OK with it.

She's doing something good!!!!!!!!!

She doesn't do it alone, but one day she decided that it was her new passion and with the help of several attorneys got involved.

That's why she was with Kamala.

Vice President Kamala Harris was joined by Kim Kardashian at the White House on Thursday to discuss the use of pardons and criminal justice reform, one day after the Biden administration announced it was granting clemency to 16 people convicted of non-violent drug crimes.

Four of those who received pardons this week joined Harris, Kardashian and White House Director of Public Engagement Steve Benjamin for the roundtable in the Roosevelt Room.

there is a problem with some on DU who won't accept that there IS a good-sized demographic of the American public who DO follow "reality shows" (my own family included who call it their "guilty pleasure" so they can laugh and taunt). These people watch all the "Real Housewives of..." and whatever silly (IMHO) shows.

Many of these people stay on the periphery of any "political news" obsession like those of us who post on DU, but many are also voters and if they eschew hours and hours of pure "news" in favor of "escapism", that view needs to be penetrated somehow and these show stars can do just that.

And as a sidenote, since she was once married to 45-embracer "Ye" (formerly Kanye), she can serve as a foil to that loon.

As as a further sidenote, one of the most hilarious but EFFECTIVE promos for John Fetterman's 2022 Senatorial campaign, was to enlist reality show "Jersey Shore's" star "Snooki" in his ads that trolled Dr. Oz - https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2022-election/pa-senate-candidate-fetterman-turns-snooki-mock-opponent-dr-oz-jersey-rcna38377

KK has been publicizing criminal justice reform for years. Her celebrity status has widened awareness of the issue all across the nation, but apparently not on DU. That's why the WH had her there - millions more will learn about Biden's pardons because they'll see it on Social Media.

If Harris had asked her there to talk about Brazilian Butt Lifts and lip injections, that would be one thing. But this is a good cause.

Please, check yourself before you wreck yourself.
