Every year we host a post-xmas party for family and a few friends. We eat a lot and play cards and talk. This year, the invitation included a "no politics" clause because one set of cousins are trumpettes. This year, too, our company included a cousin and her family whom we rarely see--she is the product of a liaison between my father-in-law and a student and there are people who still don't know about her--and as they were getting ready to leave, I spoke to her alone and asked her if she and her daughter would like pussy hats (I knit them constantly and have given away at least 60) and to my delight she really really wanted them. When she wore one back into the room with the rest of the crowd, one of the wives of a trumper cousin said *she'd* like one, too! Two more sidled up to me and asked for hats, which they stuck in their pockets so their husbands wouldn't see.
A successful "no politics" party!

(8,445 posts)If you have an abundance of pussy hats, you may want to consider advertising them and selling them. I know there's a huge demand. I would buy one from you.

(46,166 posts)I took a break but had to come back, too, because of the orange menace.
Do you think they would sell for?
I would look at what's for sale online, and then you could compare yours to those. Of course you'd have to figure in postage, or add it on. If I were to make one it would take me an awfully long time, because I'd first have to figure out how to do it.
If you live somewhere near where there's a march you could probably sell on a local site.
I'm not a savvy business woman, so my guess at a price doesn't count for much.

(4,483 posts)we attended this summer, the campus liberals club was selling them--made of plush, sewn--for $2 each. I think that's a reasonable price for an amateur to charge. Of course, if you're in this to make money, you'd have to charge more.
If you sew, a plush one is easy and quick to make. Measure the circumference of your head and cut a rectangle of plush half that measurement. Make the rectangle about 12-15 inches long, depending on how deep a cuff you want. Sew up the side seams, turn it rightside out, push a pencil or something into the corners to sharpen the ears and fold back the cuff at the bottom.

(4,483 posts)and am frankly a little shocked at the prices quoted for some that are offered online. I'll be happy to send you one if you'll reimburse me for postage--send me a du mail. When people insist on "giving you something" I ask them to make a donation to Planned Parenthood. I view giving away these hats as my donation to the cause. I don't have enough money to contribute dollars to every candidate I'd like to support, but I figure every woman--or man--wearing a pussy hat is support, too.
BTW I make light pink, smaller pussyhats for summertime. My husband and I wear ours *everywhere* we go--that's how I've given away so many of them.

(46,166 posts)Sounds like a fun party. I crochet but wondered if the knitted hat pattern was easy enough for a newbie knitter. A friend sent me the url for the one she uses but I haven't tried it yet.

(8,445 posts)Mind you, I never learned enough to call myself a crocheter (is that a word? ) I found a nice pattern for a pussy hat that's supposedly for beginners. I might give it a shot.

(46,166 posts)There's so much lovely new yarn types out there. I learned way, way back in the 1950s. Today's yarns like the wool/poly blends make crocheting a dream. And yup, you're a crocheter!
P.S. Joann's is having a big yarn sale right now.

(8,445 posts)I've got a big container of beautiful yarn that I bought on clearance awhile back, but haven't found the solitude I need to summon up my patience to learn.

(46,166 posts)Sounds like you have a nice stash for practice.
Today I've been hunting for cotton jersey fabric to sew for a local baby charity. But jeez, the prices! I'm thinking that I should just go to the ARC store and see if I can find a bargain. I never sew with knits so I never priced it before. Yikes. But I'm enjoying the sewing so I'm determined to find some at lower than retail.

(2,275 posts)Can we all start knitting pink mustangs for the Democrat's mascot? (Instead of a plain old lumbering donkey?)

I like the mustang idea. Because, in the interest of accuracy, the jackasses are the other guys, not us.

Actually I like our donkey. It stands for the working class, not the rich elite.

(17,984 posts)That was the general premise set forth. I thought it strange that such clear instruction for marital bliss existed since the 14th century and yet not many people heed it.

(2,857 posts)Not everyone gets married for the right reasons- believe it or not, lol. I think the biggest problem is the ones that get in a relationship just to be in a relationship. They want someone to hang out with and to belong with as part of a team. Then they get into this avalanche of "what comes next" and find themselves married with kids to someone they don't even like. Nobody heads good advice at that point because they have transitioned from 'we' to the 'me' that they never should have left.
Happy wife, happy life.. unless you would rather still be a frat boy.

(68,825 posts)for every candidate in the last few years, you would be surprised to see all the women who mouthed voting for Obama when their husbands couldn't hear.

(51,674 posts)It is being held in over 230 US cities and around the world on Jan. 20th and 21st. See if your city is on the list. It is a free event and they only mention tickets as a source for a head count so the organizers can plan the events better. All people are welcome, not just women. The theme is "Hear Our Vote" and the goal is to get people to vote for progressives during the midterms and at state and local levels too. Please pass this link on. I do not use social media and got this off of Google somehow.
