officers in this country are the protectors of the citizenry and in many cases the targets of criminals. So, why in the world are they not in the forefront of advocacy for sensible gun control? Where is their voice?

...then regular civilians do too.
Police are generally in favor of stronger background checks, in my experience.

They represent the biggest threats to our civil rights. Police states are called that for a reason. They are conservative and authoritarian in nature - what they want is very seldom in the public interest.
