A generation ago, Republicans sought to protect President Richard Nixon by urging the Senate Watergate committee to look at supposed wrongdoing by Democrats in previous elections. The committee chairman, Sam Ervin, a Democrat, said that would be as foolish as the man who went bear hunting and stopped to chase rabbits.
Today, amid a growing criminal inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congressional Republicans are again chasing rabbits. We know because were their favorite quarry.
In the year since the publication of the so-called Steele dossier the collection of intelligence reports we commissioned about Donald Trumps ties to Russia the president has repeatedly attacked us on Twitter. His allies in Congress have dug through our bank records and sought to tarnish our firm to punish us for highlighting his links to Russia. Conservative news outlets and even our former employer, The Wall Street Journal, have spun a succession of mendacious conspiracy theories about our motives and backers.
We are happy to correct the record. In fact, we already have. ..............

........... Despite his public statements, Mr. Simpson and his attorney demanded during the interview that the transcript be kept confidential, Taylor Foy, a spokesman for the Senate Judiciary Committee, tells The Daily Caller.
Simpson, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, was interviewed by the Senate panel on Aug. 22. He was also interviewed in a closed setting by the House Intelligence Committee on Nov. 14.
The Judiciary interview came after weeks of negotiation in which Simpson refused an invitation to appear before the committee in an open hearing. By declining that invitation, Simpson declined an opportunity for transparency, Foy asserted.
After facing a subpoena from Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, Mr. Simpson refused to provide public testimony, using his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination to negotiate for a closed-door interview, says Foy.
Foy also claims that Simpson has refused to answer dozens of questions voluntarily and that Fusion GPS has failed to provide the Committee with documents and responses to follow-up questions after the interview.
Fusion GPS turned over nearly 20,000 pages of documents to the committee in August, prior to Simpsons hearing. But, a committee spokesman at the time said that most of the records were news clippings and of little value to the panels investigation.
The Committees invitation for Mr. Simpson to testify at a public hearing remains on the table, added Foy. ....................

Fusion GPS founders say they were 'shocked' by contents of 'Steele dossier'
.... "We don't believe the Steele dossier was the trigger for the F.B.I.'s investigation into Russian meddling," they wrote.
"As we told the Senate Judiciary Committee in August, our sources said the dossier was taken so seriously because it corroborated reports the bureau had received from other sources, including one inside the Trump camp."
Simpson and Fritsch also suggested that Republican lawmakers were looking to distract from the core mission of the investigation into Russia's role in the election, including possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow, by focusing attention on the dossier and Fusion's work on behalf of the Clinton campaign.
Some GOP lawmakers have raised concerns in recent weeks that the law enforcement probe into the matter was sparked by the opposition research dossier, which contains unverified and salacious information about Trump.
The New York Times reported last week that FBI's counterintelligence investigation into Russian meddling in the election instead began after Australian officials notified U.S. officials that a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign had told an Australian diplomat that the Russians obtained damaging emails about then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
