How about Ellen DeGeneres as the 2020 Presidential Candidate?

She's popular. She has progressive ideas. She speaks well. She's very friendly and congenial. She's on TV every day, and stands up for women's rights. She's relatively young and would attract the millennial vote. She is in full support of LGBTQ rights. She has great presence on TV. What more could we want?

She'd be great, right? Never mind that she has no government experience and has never held elected office. What does that matter?

What do you think?

Maybe Oprah for prez after all, and Ellen for...Health and Human Services?

This all makes me realize how much better the world would be if only women who were pop celebrities ran it.

Admittedly, though, he's much smarter than Donald Trump.

Maybe the Old Man from that show.

In the New America that alone qualifies her.

The problem is, she's smart. That's an automatic dis-qualifier.

Ellen would not only have the sexist problems, but she would also have the LGBT issues to defend. I love her to death and think she would be terrific, but her message is being communicated quite well in the mode she has chosen. Plus I don't think she wants to deal w/ the POS she would have to in order to govern.

No more celebrities. No more: we need a business man to run the Government like a business nonsense (hint: because the Government is not a business anymore than corporations are people). No more reality TV personalities. No movies stars either.

The creative/entertainment industry has its own lane with talents of varying levels. They contribute to the national dialogue and frequently use their platforms to do a lot of social good. I like Oprah. I like Ellen. I even occasionally like The Rock. But not in the White House.

If these individuals really desire a place in politics then start at the local/state level. For the more ambitious, run for a congressional seat. Franken ran for the Senate, won and learned the ropes before his untimely resignation.

But please, stop with the popularity factor as a winning ticket to the WH. We shouldn't be looking to celebrities to fill the role for POTUS, anymore than desiring a TV surgeon in the OR.

This isn't an attempt to demean or belittle anyone, only to remind people that the Presidency requires more than being popular, giving a moving speech, making people laugh. These are all good qualities but knowledge of the law, of history, of foreign policy, of the levers of power and how to use them in a Democratic Republic are--as we're witnessing right now--essential to govern effectively. And when misused or screwed up? The effects can be devastating. Not only for us but the world.

IMHO, the Trumpster's reign should rule out, squelch, scare the bejesus out of anymore celebrities looking in the mirror and fantasizing . . . POTUS. Yes, they can easily see themselves better than Trump. But that is setting the bar wa-a-ay too low. And it merely feeds into the crank idea that credentials, experience and knowledge are unnecessary, a Tea Party/Sarah Palin philosophy.

Enough already!

Makes me worry (even more) about this country having the intelligence to govern itself.

But I enjoyed your OP. Thanks.
