Beware of fake military members on Facebook.

I know everyone on DU is already aware of the various scams on Facebook. But you might know some older (and younger) people who aren't as savvy.

I'm not on Facebook but I know of stories where people have been scammed by the plethora of phony military members of all branches.

I also have direct knowledge of a few.

The most recent to come across the desk is a fake General blackmailing women who have sent nude photos through email. Pay X amount or the photos go viral.

The latest victim had no clue this could happen. Knew enough to sign on to Facebook and operate email but had no idea how it all works. About the dangers on the internet - nothing. Older woman. A great-grandmother. Trusting. Naive. Clueless.

If you know anyone who has a good heart and a giving nature but who is also naive and an easy mark, please warn them. Please let them know the dangers.

The usual scam by fake military members is to string as many men and women along as possible to get money and care packages, usually of very expensive items, with the promise of dating, falling in love, marriage, etc or just preying on patriotism or the (fake) mutual sadness of a loved one lost to war. Some dangling a hook-up have turned out to be sexual predators.

Please - warn people.

Thanks!

Solly

4. Perhaps your con isn't good enough to attract the lonely and desperate.

Joking, of course.

This is actually a serious problem and people have been hurt. The woman from the other day was more ashamed than angry. More hurt than anything, really. She reported the incident but was afraid of people finding out. She wants the person stopped before more damage is caused.

5. Sadly, not everyone knows it is a scam. The latest victim was in her 70's.

Lonely, thought she'd found someone she liked. Sweet woman, just terribly naive.

6. From what I hear, that is the way of it. I wish everyone understood it is a scam.

They don't though. People are getting hurt and all are getting ripped off for money.

I know it's laughable - how people fall for such things - but some people do.

Especially the old and the young, and the lonely and the desperate.
