His dementia would be evident to Mueller and his team.

She said there can be written answers, generally prepared by a client's lawyers, but those are in response to document and/or data requests.

She said the Supreme Court established precedent in the Nixon Tapes case that presidents are not above the law and must comply with a supoena. If Mueller supoenas Trump to testify, he will have no choice but to do so.

Honestly, though, I think it would be hilarious if Trump was allowed to respond in writing only he'd have to write out the answers himself with Mueller present and Trump's lawyers wouldn't be able to help him with responses, only advise if he needed to invoke his 5th amendment privilege against self-incrimination based on the question.

Not to make that request would be malpractice. The interesting thing will be to see what Trump does when Mueller says no.

Trump won't be the one answering if it's written answers. Instead, Trump's lawyers will write the answers. Not acceptable. He needs to submit to actual questions in person and answer them in his own words. He can have an attorney or attorneys there to advise him, but he has to speak the answers himself, or there's not assurance that they're his answers.

Mueller should absolutely refuse to accept written answers to questioning.

this is nothing new

Hillary Clinton submitted formal answers under penalty of perjury on Thursday about her use of a private email server, saying 20 times that she did not recall the requested information or related discussions, while also asserting that no one ever warned her that the practice could run afoul of laws on preserving federal records.

"Secretary Clinton states that she does not recall being advised, cautioned, or warned, she does not recall that it was ever suggested to her, and she does not recall participating in any communication, conversation, or meeting in which it was discussed that her use of a clintonemail.com e-mail account to conduct official State Department business conflicted with or violated federal recordkeeping laws," lawyers for Clinton wrote.
