The GOP Is Disappearing In New York
January 9, 2018 at 7:16 am EST
By Taegan Goddard

Politico: “Two potential candidates for New York governor against incumbent Andrew Cuomo have dropped out in the past week. No candidate against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has gotten beyond the whisper phase. There’s still no challenger to the state attorney general or comptroller. In President Donald Trump’s home state, the New York Republican Party is on the verge of disaster. It has so far come up dry in its efforts to put together a top-tier 2018 statewide ticket — a budding failure with implications that could ripple beyond state borders.”

because the city rejected him by 60 some-odd points, and he lost his home borough of Manhattan by 76 points. Hurt feewings. So he hits back with a tax bill that takes money out of the pockets of those who rejected him, and goodbye to the Republican Party in New York.

Let me know when Peter King loses his seat, or Staten Island votes for a Democrat.

great idea to have Oprah run against an incumbent senator in a red state - she has instant name recognition and the money to support her own candidacy. The Clintons have been residents of NY for years now, so they might get accused of carpet bagging if they move again.

George Clooney was born in Kentucky - challenge Rand Paul or Mitch McConnell

another high property tax county. While my southern Westchester district is distinctly blue (Nita Lowey), the one right above us is truly purple - back and forth every few years. That part of Westchester is getting murdered in the new tax laws - that will be the ONLY issue on the table in 2018.

I'm not sure why more people don't know about this. There were more people elected literally as Democrats but because a group of "Independent Democrats" caucus with Republicans, it throws control of the state Senate to the GOP.

But yeah, everybody...."support Democrats always!"

because that's what people like them in their area do to get elected. It's always been this way, although every election in this polarized era sees a few more switch label.

Hard as it is to believe, the GOP still has some left-wing voters who register Republican but vote left.

Mislabeling in politics is extremely common and extremely commonly used to deceive. To understand, we always have to look beyond labels to behaviors.

Tue Jan 9, 2018, 11:05 AM

But are expensive just the same. They Sales Tax everything from food in the Grocery Stores, Clothing, and Medicines in some states. They have cut taxes so drastically, they have their hands out for Federal monies for Infrastructure, Education, and basic Government services, etc.

Look at the state of Kansas, for example. Sam Brownback used Kansas as the Great Conservative Experiment. He had taxes cut for the rich that Kansas went bankrupt. He was re-elected despite it all. Schools had to close a month before the rest of the Nation because there was no money in order to pay teachers. Pensions were raided. Right To Work laws implemented crippling Unions. Minimum Wage set at the Federal Levels. Sales Taxes raised on everything from basic services like Oil Changes to food in Grocery stores. Kansas was and still is a MESS.

When people travel to Florida, Arizona, Texas, and states where there is no State Income taxes, they get your money in the way of regressive Sales and Property Taxes, and still have their hands out for Federal monies because their budgets run short. Also, the quality of life and basic standards are lower. You get what you pay for.

Minnesota is a high taxed state, but we have a higher quality and standard of life here, and rank 3rd in the Nation for Business climate and low Unemployment than the states that border it.

....a progressive tax. If you have household income of 75,000 you'd only pay $3,100 - 4%.

State Sales Tax is about 8.5%. Believe it or not, these states have a higher sales tax:

Arkansas
Alabama
Louisiana
Tennessee

Outside the NYC area I think property tax is lower, too.

and Rochester is a whopping 3.3%! That's even higher than Long Island.

Here's a site where you can find the rate for every town in NYS.

https://smartasset.com/taxes/new-york-property-tax-calculator#ojPjGdLRNv

BTW, in New York City the property tax is only 0.8%, but property values are much higher than anywhere else in the state, which is why it's so expensive to live there (among other reasons)

...I remind him that you get what you pay for. Even something as simple as trash pickup - that's included in our taxes, as is the school system, fire department, police department, road maintenance, etc. He shakes his head and says, "didn't think of that"

What it comes down to is what people want and how much they're willing to pay.

BTW, different states have different criteria for property taxes - here we pay a certain rate based on 70% of the assessed value of our houses. Some towns charge based on 100% and, unfortunately some towns, rather than raise the tax "rate", raise the assessed value of property.

34. Republicans are in trouble as a Party.........
Tue Jan 9, 2018, 10:54 AM

Overall, despite safe gerrymandered Districts in Southern States, the GOP is becoming more regionalized. Even Texas, New Mexico, Iowa, and in the Mid West, there are numbers of Democrats making their presence and voices known. Candidates are coming forth to challenge Republicans because they see what is going on in Washington, D.C.

Take the GOP Agenda for example...... Who wants to say to voters, "I approve of TAKING AWAY Health Care, Medicare, and Social Security"? "I approve Tax Cuts for the Rich, while screwing over the Middle Class"? "I approve deportation of the Dreamers, though they are law abiding and work hard"? "I approve of making Voting harder than easier"? "I approve the selling off of Public lands and National Parks for Oil and Gas exploitation"? "I approve deregulation of everything, but REGULATE a woman's body"? "I approve of NO MUSLIMS or other non-Americans from entering the country"?

That is what it is boiling down to, folks. Having to support an UNPOPULAR president and a GOP agenda that makes the Rich richer and the rest of us......SCREWED. Rise up, Resist, and VOTE!!!
