So it appears to be going. Amazon and Jeff Bezos appear to be moving toward total domination of just about everything. If Amazon acquires Target, it will own the largest retail empire ever in existence. And retail drives the economy, frankly.
This is frightening, of course, but appears to be unstoppable. Amazon is also looking into buying a mid-sized bank corporation. What will be next? Will it start acquiring manufacturers, as well. That could be. Imagine Amazon owning, say, Apple. Maybe they'll buy up one of the major communications giants, as well. Verizon?
Amazon is a monster. It may well have grown to a size that cannot be stopped by anything.
We are all Prime Members now.

(2,381 posts)In more ways than one. These developments really make me appreciate Ronnie Reagan completely destroying anti-trust protections. Toppling of the Sherman Anti-trust act was the first sign of the Apocalypse. Citizens United was probably the second. We're SO screwed.

(102,560 posts)they've been left alone enough to do what they'd historically tried to do. Either way, his buying them, to date, has not been a negative.

That's the thing, you can get anything from Amazon. Even seeds and plants. What was that line from, "Demolition Man"....."All restaurants are Taco Bell now."

(46,166 posts)Btw, one time I priced out toilet paper locally and at Amazon. Amazon was less so I ordered a case. It's only me and hubby but I hate to buy tp. It's so bulky in the cart.
Good luck finding shoes that fit well! I'm looking for a purse, too.
The best thing that's happened regarding Amazon is that my cousin, who buys a Prime membership, is that she can give away an abbreviated Prime to four people. So she gave me one. No free movies or books but I get free shipping. That's just the best.

(20,027 posts)and run it like a "public PX" system for the "public good": not to maximize profits; fair and reasonable pay for all employees? A "public option" for everyday shopping. Voters can change/influence the management. The public realizes the benefits rather than Bezos and a relative handful of shareholders.
Maybe the general public should be the benefactors of eliminating so much competition and so many opportunities for independence, self-determination, and self-realization found in small business. Wasn't that one of the big objections to totalitarian communism?
Walmart, too?
