Not sure who Elizabeth McLaughlin is, but she pretty much nails it in her analysis...
....
5/ On the Fusion GPS retention on Trump: "it evolved somewhat quickly into issues of his relationships to organized crime figures . . ." (Tr. 61-62)
6/ Fusion GPS concluded early in their investigation that Trump has serious ties to Russian organized crime, including money in his companies from "Kazakhstan, among other places, and that some of it you just couldn't account for." (Tr. 67-70)
7/ Fusion GPS hired Steele as a part of "drilling down" on specific areas of concern about Trump's business dealings internationally, and Steele was not the only subcontractor hired. (Tr. 76-78)
8/ Asked about Christopher Steele as an investigator, Glenn Simpson of Fusion GPS described him as a "quality" investigator in high profile situations and "a boy scout." (Tr. 81-82)
9/ Fusion sent Steele into Russia with a broad assignment to look into Trump's dealings in Russia. And what they found was that "it wasn't a giant secret" that "Donald Trump had a relationship with the Kremlin." People were talking about it freely.
...
45/ And then there is this explosive bit: Steele and Simpson weren't sure that @Comey EVEN KNEW ABOUT THE ALLEGATIONS. Which would explain a lot. An awful lot. (Tr. 220-221)

I am simply floored. After the past year, I expect it to be bad. After reading the analysis, it makes a very convincing case that we have a compromised government. Sobering.

(24,801 posts)much of this came up on MSNBC shows last night, but you (and McLauglin) add some important details. Looking forward to reading her thread.
Heres the conundrum: Americans need to understand that the FBI is not a monolith. That is, there are biases and I daresay forces on both ends of the political spectrum there.

(17,984 posts)I mean, I'm sure we have our own ex-intel people who could have done the job. I also know that Steele was known to have the right contacts for the job, and that is the reason I keep hearing for choosing him. But I wonder if Fusion wanted to avoid any American agents predisposed to bias.

(24,801 posts)It was Steeles expertise, contacts, and reputation, that got him the assignment.

(1,825 posts)This was an excellent analysis of the main points.
Not a lawyer, but what worries me is Trumps ties to organized crime in Russia. And the potential for blackmail.
And money laundering. His golf courses outside the US are not making money. He's been bankrupt 4 times. He owned casinos. And we the people have not seen his tax returns.
Who else owns a piece of Trump and what are they getting in return?
My other thought was, what about his kids? Are they into the same thing daddy was into and does that make Trump even more vulnerable? Nobody is talking about that. They too have been to many of the same places dear old dad has been to !

(23,367 posts)For me, what was a mind blower was how all this information was so simply and easily uncovered. Glenn Wilson's area of expertise is public records. He immerses himself in information that is available to any of us willing to do the work. He uncovered bits and pieces of Dotard's life here in the states and hired subcontractor Christopher Steele to do the same in Russia because that's his wheelhouse. I don't think Wilson thought he'd actually find what he ended up finding. Bottom line is that any investigative reporter could have done what he did...and they didn't. So, I agree with your post. I am floored!! First at how the MSM profoundly let us down and equally, how the majority holding power in DC is compromised beyond reason. We're in real trouble. the 2018 elections are crucial but even if we take over the House, we will not rid ourselves of the problem.
I'm not done reading the testimony yet but it is riveting. There's a lot of "there" there. Recommended reading without a doubt. The cast of characters is unbelievable. The story is just shocking IMO.

(90,371 posts)... stupid emails to even think that a person who constantly stiffs subcontractors could be crooked.
MontanaMama
(23,367 posts)Common sense stuff. Except...emails. Not to mention, the guy controlling the narrative, the guy who can't quit blabbing about how rich he is - doesn't release his taxes...holy hell, THAT isn't suspicious. Give me a break. Fusion thought that was incredibly suspicious. They procured tax bills...easy peazy and one thing let to another.
