Not Richard Nixon. Not anyone.
The corruption is so deep that it is an existential threat to our democracy.
Is Donald Trump above the law? Only Robert Mueller can answer that question? That is a lot of eggs to put in one basket.
This morning, in a tweet, Donald Trump suggests that the Republicans stop the witch hunt against him. It is the most overt obstruction of justice that he can suggest. What else does he need to say?
As Richard Painter is prone to say, "This is a very, very serious situation".
We have had very serious corruption in our government in the past. It has always been there. But there has never been anything close to the corruption we are now seeing in the White House and in the Republican Party. It is beyond belief.

(20,605 posts)separation of powers is supposed to save the democracy. This is something the founding fathers did not imagine.
And never one this practiced and wily at corruptness and the use of power to achieve personal gains.
It IS "a very, very serious situation". One I'm not sure we (the opposition) are capable of dealing with. Republicon dirty pool has become what appears to be an accepted practice in America -- and they have mastered the art and have the Grand Master Con-Artist at their helm.
Frankly, I'm worried.

(17,027 posts)they knew what they were doing was wrong and tried to hide it. Now, it's blatant, in your face, kind of corruption. There doesn't seem to be any fear of being held accountable and I believe that is coming from the top down. Twitler has gotten away with shady deals his whole life so why shouldn't they do the same thing. I've heard that integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching. Well, everyone is watching and they aren't even trying to do the right thing or making a serious effort to hide the wrong they are doing.

(16,646 posts)Hard for me to judge. There was some serious corruption during and after the civil war. Also, one really has to view what happened during Andrew Jackson's admin. And I have to say, I don't think the Iran-Contra thing gets nearly the attention it deserved. There was an active attempt to set up a true "deep state" or otherwise extra-governmental arrangement and in the end we don't really know if they succeeded or not.

(5,210 posts)Kakistocracy is a term meaning a state or country run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. The word was first coined by English author Thomas Love Peacock in 1829, but was rarely used until the 21st century.
