I'm an aged comic freak and I can tell you with conviction that the Flagston, Hi and Lois, have been the town's biggest wet blankets and the Home Owners Association nightmare. They've been squaresville so long it's come back in style and went out again... and again.
In spite of his name, Hi would never get caught being. Lois' brother Beetle Bailey is a burnout army lifer who still maintains the rank of private, but I always considered Lois to be the stereotype conservative straight laced older sibling. That's why I raised my eyebrows when I discovered that Lois shook her fist and shouted at last year's Women's March. From my years of reading, not much riles Lois. Not even her drunken neighbor.
Actually, what really pleasantly surprised me was that Dik Browne went political for the first time in 65 years (as far as I know), and he's on our side. This is pretty awesome:

Are Hi & Lois related to Dagwood & Blondie Bumstead? I didn't think so but I can't remember their surname.

(53,061 posts)Walker and Browne no longer write or illustrate the strip (Dik Browne died in 1989)
The strip is produced by the Walker sons and drawn by Browne's son

Hi and Lois' last name is Flagston. And though creator Mort Walker is still alive, his sons Brian and Greg now produce the comic strip. (I can't find the specific date that the sons took over.)
