We are no in an era where the GOP sees racism and discrimination based on even religion or sexual orientation is an important freedom and should be part of the political process.

Because the "Golden Gophers" are from a state that has worked pretty hard to counter institutional racism.

Even those who didn't attend University of Minnesota have some affection for various Gophers teams, and referring to them as being proud of their racism and bigotry won't go down too well.
