No one is talking about this so I thought Id start a discussion.
This district is safely Republican, and I think it is not possible to take it. The incumbent (who resigned under typically Republican tawdry circumstances) didnt even have Democratic opposition the last few elections. Latest polls say R+12 I think, and that is probably how it will end up. It is carefully drawn to include none of the Democratic voting Pittsburgh metro area, and include Greene County (aka North Mississippi) and Westmoreland County. This seat was once held by Rick Santorectum, and thats just about all you need to know.
No doubt Trump will show up, utter a few syllables and declare that his endorsement made the difference.

(1,216 posts)I will be voting for Lamb but I do know it's an uphill battle. This is pure Trumpista land

(28,394 posts)Lamb has a lot of grassroots support. This district was gerrymandered. Parts of it used to be represented by Frank Mascara (D) and covers a huge swath of SW PA.

(611 posts)He was a good man. He kept a picture of my dog Odie (wearing a Mascara button) on his desk. I worked in his campaign a number of times. The Repukes redistricted him so that he had to run against Murtha. It was so finely done that his house was left in his district but his parking space was not.

(28,394 posts)Murtha's district was eventually redistricted into the 12th. It is now represented by Rothfus (R). Murtha was legendary.
I had forgotten about Santorum and even Doug Walgren representing the 18th. Mascara was our Congressman when we moved here about 30 years ago. He was from the Mon Valley.... which used to be a democratic stronghold. Not so much anymore, I guess. You were lucky to have known him.

(611 posts)Frank did not have the best of childhoods. The children were fostered out because the family could not feed them At some point Frank was encouraged to join the Navy (alternative being reform school) and ended up in the Seabees. He learned the construction trade from them, and in the fullness of time, did very well in that field. Self made man of strength and compassion.
When my first and only child was born after many many years of trying, I took him in to Franks office at three days old, to show him to the staff. His first visit anywhereoutside the hospital or home. I like to remind him that he had his diaper changed by his dad on his congressmans desk.
Boy did I ever derail this topic! Sorry.

(28,394 posts)That's a great story! Hope it ends with your son becoming involved in politics! LOL

(611 posts)He was the youngest Fellow in Obamas 2012 campaign, we had to get special clearance to send him to training. He did well enough that he ran the county office himself (at 14) and freed up the manager to help out elsewhere. He is taking a break from things while he is in college (and he was gut punched by the unfortunate events of 2016) but I think he may be back.
They used to call for me to help in campaigns. At a certain point they started calling for him! I love him very much and am too proud for words. He has the courage of his convictions, a sense of fairness, and compassion.

(4,230 posts)My husband went to Connor Lamb's office to donate and pick up yard signs. We need to work for him. This area used to be a beautiful blue...I hate living here now. We had to have security cameras installed because people always steal our Democratic candidate's signs. Now we will call the police if they touch them.

(611 posts)It seems very negative. So now I will look up Connor Lambs campaign and send him a donation. And if it is permitted by the moderators, I will post contact info for him in a new post.
Thanks for spurring me to action, blue neen. If we go down, we should go down swinging. I could not look at myself in the mirror if I didnt do something to help take the House.

(15,095 posts)He was to have appeared at the library in Washington but the weather had other ideas. In the city of Washington, at least, there will be heavy turnout for Lamb. Im seeing lots of enthusiasm and think we have a chance to turn this district blue.
