Carrier Employees, Soon to Be Laid Off, Feel Betrayed by Donald Trump

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/carrier-employees-soon-to-be-laid-off-feel-betrayed-by-donald-trump?utm_campaign=crowdfire&utm_content=crowdfire&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter#810178352871047168-tw#1515717162815

Last night, at Sully’s Bar & Grill, which sits across the street from the Carrier Corporation’s furnace plant, on the west side of Indianapolis, and serves as the de-facto company bar, two of Carrier’s soon-to-be-laid-off longtime employees had a drink and talked about how they got there. Today, the profitable H.V.A.C. company, owned by United Technologies Corporation—a federal contractor whose climate, controls, and security division, of which Carrier is a part, reported three billion dollars in operating profit in 2016—is letting go of more than two hundred employees in its second and final wave of Indiana-based layoffs, which began last July. In total, the company will be laying off more than five hundred employees as it moves manufacturing jobs to Monterrey, Mexico. Many of those employees voted for Donald Trump, who made saving Carrier’s “big, beautiful plant” one of his most repeated campaign promises. It was part of his broader preëlection claim that “A Trump Administration will stop the jobs from leaving America.”

That promise is the main reason that the soon-to-be ex-Carrier employees Renee Elliott and Duane Oreskovic voted for Trump, they told me yesterday. Elliott, a divorced mother of two who will turn forty-five next week, and Oreskovic, who is thirty-eight and single, both earned nearly eighteen dollars an hour making A90 furnaces at Carrier, where they worked their way up from entry-level jobs over the past five years. Neither possesses a college degree, and their jobs afforded them middle-class lives: Elliott is paying a mortgage on a house in Indianapolis, and Oreskovic said that he “could go out and enjoy myself when I wanted, play some pool.” When Carrier announced the planned layoffs, in February of 2016, on what many employees soon began calling “D Day,” their financial futures suddenly came into question. Then, in the run-up to the election, Trump seemed to offer a solution, with his tough talk about stopping the flow of American jobs to other countries, including Mexico.

I laugh at the white trumpanzees, until I realize that they will make all of us eat sparrows off coathangers, just as long as the "shithole" ethnicities don't even have the coathangers.

And no one mentions the $7 million that The Republican Shithole "negotiated" that the city had to pay to Carrier. By my estimate that's about $28K that the city paid for each of the "saved" 250 jobs. I am betting those who were laid off would have been better off if that $7 million went to them, rather than the company that posted Billions of dollars of profits last year.

The Republican Shithole screwed those people over in a bad, bad way, in a glaringly obvious way, and they refused to see it because they don't like people who don't look like them.

I am sad to say that I have little sympathy right now.

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

The Lee Atwater days now seem nostalgic.

They are wrapped up in this whole false ideology of worship at the alter of the interests of businessmen that they can't process or dont care about the fact that businessmen fuck over anyone that gets in the way of profit.

I work for a large healthcare system in an urban area and am AMAZED at the number of coworkers who weren't aware of the housing discrimination, the Central Park Five, etc. To most, Drumpf is the showboat *billionaire* New Yorker from reality TV. They weren't aware of Ivana's spousal rape allegations, his "personal Vietnam," Wall Street bailouts, stiffing contractors, layoffs, etc. Those from NY and NJ were aware, but not many beyond that.

Democrats have got to stop assuming that everyone pays attention the way political junkies (DUers) pay attention. Democrats also need to do a better job of messaging. PBS's Frontline did an excellent -- detailed -- segment on both candidates, but how many Americans are watching PBS's Frontline?

Democrats also need to do a better job of understanding how voters think. If the WWC is afraid of losing his/her job -- basic survival -- then it's no surprise they're going to give the *successful* businessman a shot. This isn't rocket science. Drumpf barely won Pennsylvania and I guarantee in 2020 that it's going to swing back; we just need Alabama-level GOTV efforts in reliably blue areas and those few counties that flipped from Obama to Drumpf. Not sure about WI and MI, but PA, yes.

Anyone silly enough to believe his bullshit can blame only themselves when he later (and inevitably) "betrays" them.

Trump was all over that situation, propagandizing it to the hilt, photo ops galore, yeah this kind of thing is going to stop because I, the great donald trump, am going to put an end to this kind of thing. I am the great savior!

Now he's playing golf on mar a Lago while those same people are getting pink slipped and trump doesn't give a shit, only cares about his photo ops.

NONE of the major news networks are covering this!
