here is what happened in this last week.

Just my speculation.

We have been played for fools by idiots who can't think more than 1 move ahead... but they do plan at least that 1 move... and we play along as if it wasn't planned at all.

This is what I think happened and why.

One week ago a very damaging book (damaging to Trump) was released and it had a great deal of "truth" to it... even the factually incorrect parts had some truth.

a) The White House is full of idiots, incompetents, traitors, grifters. And at least a few people who think they are modern day Machiavellis who can shape the United States into their twisted vision of a whites-only or whites in charge nation.

b) Trump is all the things we believe, self-centered, narcissistic, average or below average IQ, possibly suffering from early stages of dementia.

After the release of this book, the White House swings into action, sending minions out to try to lessen the impact by claiming the author is a liar, that the events never happened, that it is all fake news.

As part of that reaction to the book, they arrange for a bi-partisan hour-long meeting with a group of Republican and Democrats from both the House and Senate and Trump to show that the President is "in charge" and "a great deal maker".

What the handlers forgot is that their chief really is suffering from Dementia. That he will readily agree to whatever the last person suggests... which led to him agreeing with Senator Feinstein that a "clean DACA bill" would be good. He was corrected in the meeting by the hard-line Republicans present but the damage was done. This was compounded by a later cabinet meeting where Trump let the "cat out of the bag" that the immigration meeting was a "show" and that he gave a "great performance". This means that his handlers (Kelly Ann, Steve Miller, Hope Hicks) told him that the hour-long meeting was a "show" that he had to "perform well" in... because of "Fire and Fury" book and the impression that he can't focus long enough to not fall asleep or get up and turn on the network TV.

That led to the hard right (Fox, Ann Coulter, Alex Jones, Rush) losing their collective shit over Trump "betraying" them. This is his most reliable base voters, the one segment that the entire Republican party is afraid of and why they have "gone along" with crazy Trump... tried to kill the Russia investigation, attacked Bob Mueller, etc. All because of this segment of the Republican base.

So... mess number 2 now... Stephen Miller to the rescue. The White House invites Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin to a meeting with the President to discuss a bi-partisan compromise. Only it was a complete set-up. Steve Miller invites a bunch of hard-right anti-immigration House and Senate members to attend as well... all to ensure that the bi-partisan deal is blown out of the water. Not only that, I'm am CERTAIN that before the meeting started, Steve whispers into the Presidents ear that we don't need more Haitians or blacks from those "shithole" countries in Africa. To not agree to any deal that includes those refugees. This aligns with Trump's personal racism so when that subject comes up... blam... the Nazi wing of the Republican party is sort of mollified, the bi-partisan deal is DOA.

What Miller and the ultra-right didn't count on was the world's reaction to what the President said in this meeting.

Like I said... everything Trump and Steve Miller and the remaining idiots in the White House (including racist John Kelly) did this week was planned, but only as far as being a reaction to the last thing that hit the news cycle.

Book release saying Trump is mentally unstable - reaction - Trump chairs a "show meeting" on immigration.

"Show meeting" outrages the far right - reaction - Trump invites two Senators with a compromise bill to the White House - sandbags the participants by inviting a bunch of hard-liners who would never agree to the compromise, especially the part as relates to refugees. Trump steps in with his "shithole" comment. Hard Right loves him again... but the world hates him.

Can't wait for the next installment of this reality TV show. On second thought, yeah... let's just cancel it. It might make for good ratings but the resulting radiation from fall out will last centuries.

Thanks (?) for laying the two weeks out so succinctly.

They do seem to be pinballing from one of Assface’s crisis-inducing comments to the next.

Surely someone is running the country, right?

Trump is being managed by his minders, lied to and placated to keep him calm.
Who is minding the store then?
Kelly or Pence?
Or some of the top aides as suggested in this OP.

However, (and I must admit sadly) it would appear that Gen. Kelly is also one of the hardliners pushing and supporting Trump's opinions on racism.
This man was general in our armed forces and at the highest level and evidently he feels the same as Trump. What can anyone say at this point except how sad this is.
