AZ-SEN: GOP faces brutal Arizona primary fight

Republicans hoping to hang on to the Arizona Senate seat face an increasingly tumultuous primary environment, with firebrand former sheriff Joe Arpaio entering the race from the right and Rep. Martha McSally trying to win over President Trump’s supporters without alienating more moderate general election voters.

The Tuesday announcement from Arpaio, whose criminal contempt conviction Trump pardoned last year, came just days before McSally joined the primary. While Arpaio made his name as an immigration hardliner and promoter of the discredited conspiracy theory that former President Obama wasn’t born in the United States, McSally is the party establishment pick meant to appeal in the general election.

But McSally doesn’t have a clear path in the late August primary for the seat now held by Sen. Jeff Flake (R), who announced his retirement in the face of poor poll numbers.

State Sen. Kelli Ward (R) was originally the only candidate running from the right, but new polling shows Arpaio close to McSally while siphoning off Ward’s conservative supporters.

Arpaio’s entry changes the calculus of a race that could become one of the more brutal primaries in the country.

“With the entrance of Joe Arpaio and now the formal announcement of McSally, this race just got very interesting — and not in a good way — for Kelli Ward,” former state GOP chairman Robert Graham told The Hill.

McSally has the establishment and Arpaio's followers are as fanatical as Trump's. She has nowhere to go.

I think McSally is the only one who can beat Sinema so here's hoping the repub primary is bloody and one of the rwnjs wins.

There are already lots of Ward signs up and these are the true believers, they don't put up a house sign they put up a small billboard in their front lawn and decorate the house. This is the hard core tea party, much more fanatical than Arpaio's who probably support him because of name recognition, and is terrible when not in front of a Fox news softball anchor pitching him soft underhand throws.

She has Reagan's campaign manager Ed Rollins as her campaign manager and they are lining up national names to support her, in addition to Trump

Rollins joins a growing list of high-profile conservatives who have recently rallied behind Dr. Ward's campaign. Last week, Steve Bannon and Laura Ingraham headlined a highly successful campaign kickoff event in Scottsdale, AZ. Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and Dick Morris have also thrown their support behind Dr. Ward.

Trump has all but endorsed her
In a tweet posted at 3:56 a.m. Arizona time, Trump said: "Great to see that Dr. Kelli Ward is running against Flake Jeff Flake, who is WEAK on borders, crime and a non-factor in Senate. He's toxic!"

10. Ward is not stupid, she's crazy and you can't have crazy without AZ

Opponents of Ward like to point to a public meeting she held in 2014 on the “chemtrails” conspiracy theory (that the trails airplanes leave behind in the sky spray chemicals on humans). She has said she does not believe the theory, but that didn’t stop people from referring to her as “Chemtrail Kelli.” She has also been a guest on the radio show of Alex Jones, a right-wing media personality and conspiracy theorist. (Trump has appeared on his program, too.) Her campaign did not respond to an interview request.

She actually doesn't believe in chemtrails but does want to give people like that a platform.

Pure AZ crazy. The thing is Trump only took AZ by 4%

Arizona and the Planet deserve a Democratic Senator.. maybe her..

Kyrsten Sinema’s decision to run for Senate in Arizona is welcome news for Democrats

13. That was from before Flake announced he wasn't going to run, should have made it clear.

Kyrsten will get the nomination but people are nervous if she can take McSally. I wish Mark Kelly would run, he would win in a landslide IMO.

6. This is a set up. They did the same thing in 2016.

In 2016 Ward challenged McCain in the R primary. The establishment sent in two candidates to split the conservative vote. McCain cruised to victory.

They are doing the same thing now. Arpaio is running to take votes away from Ward and allow McSally a comfortable victory. Arpaio has no interest in being a Senator. I predict it will work again.

11. Its not a set up, its Republican greed.

The proof of this is when AZ Republicans mounted a challenge to the citizens initiative that created a non partisan commission to determine congressional districts. If they won the challenge they would have picked up one maybe two seats for themselves.

However it would have also struck down the same commission in CA where Republicans currently have 13 Reps. A Democratically controlled map would be able to reduce that by 5 or 6 seats.

The AZ Republicans had no concern that it would hurt the party nationally if they could get 1 or 2 more seats for themselves.

If you think that Arpaio would do anything for anybody but himself then you don't really understand Arpaio.
