Two issues. First, the Republicans are framing this debate as a "Schumer shutdown" and the Democrats are filibustering the CR to hold it hostage to the DACA fix.
WTF. Why can't we Democrats reframe McConnell's bullshit. Why doesn't Schumer go to the floor and say "Mr. Majority Leader, the Democrats wish to make a procedural deal with you. Let the United States Senate vote on the House bill and allow the Graham-Durbin compromise DACA agreement to be voted on, as an amendment without being filibustered, and the Democrats will allow the vote on final passage without a filibuster." This is a no lose for the Democrats, since we already have 56 votes for the Graham-Durbin amendment. We will either get this passed this way, or the Republicans in the House, or the President, will have to shut down the government. In short, you let us vote on our amendment, without a filibuster and we'll let you vote on the final bill, without a filibuster. Deal?
Next up. I believe that CNN is basically fair, but Cuomo and Cammorata can't be as stupid as they seemed today.
CNN conducted a poll of who would be blamed for the shut down. The results were something like 34% blame the Democrats, 32% blame the Republicans and 21% blame Trump, with the rest unsure.
The hosts interpreted that poll to say more Americans blame the Democrats than Republicans. WTF. Even an idiot would add the Trump blamers with the Republican blamers and come up with a majority of Americans blame The President and the Republicans at 53%, which is a 19 point spread over the Democrats.
Boy, am I pissed this morning that the people I count on don't get it.

(16,646 posts)I don't necessarily agree, but my perspective is that the leadership is far more interested in highlighting GOP dysfunction than getting something passed.
As for CNN and Cuomo, his job is to keep eyeballs watching. So he's always going to look for the point of view that keeps everyone watching, not just the smart people.

(8,652 posts)The best scenario is a bi-partisan bill gets to trump and he signs it

(8,652 posts)But, to your point, we would win either way.
If he signs it, he'll fracture his base and if he doesn't, he appears incompetent.

(10,437 posts)doens't matter if you think they are "fair" or not. Profits rule the news and a major reason why we have trump in the whitehouse and we are watching first hand the destruction of our country.

(6,286 posts)was actually a Quinnipac poll, not a CNN-conducted poll. Question 33 at the link.

That being said, yes, when they showed it, I had the exact same thought - why are they not adding the Trump numbers to the Republican numbers? Poll interpretation malpractice for sure.

(8,652 posts)How could someone whose job it is to bring us the news interpret those numbers as blaming the Democrats?
I don't think it was intentional, I think it was incompetence.

(36,926 posts)I think they are definitely biased toward the right, although they put on a great pretense to be "fair." At least one, usually, knows where Joe and Mika are coming from.

(21,993 posts)The government is shutting down because Democrats are taking a stand. They want a deal on DACA (which 90% of people support) and Republicans aren't negotiating in good faith, so Democrats are using what leverage they have.
This means they may have to take blame for the shutdown, but again that's kinda the point -- like committing an act of civil disobedience and getting arrested, they'll face potentially negative consequences in exchange for taking a strong public stand on principle.
This year's elections are going to be about enthusiasm. Which side will most excite their voters over this action? Dem voters always seem to be going on about how they want Dems to stand and fight, show some backbone -- well that's what's going on here. There may be short term consequences, but caving to the Republicans now woukd only increase base voter apathy later in the year. Standing and fighting is what is needed to keep the blue wave momentum going. Once this is all over I doubt that the end results will drive turnout among the Republican base. Democrats, however, will be enthused to see their party refusing to back down over an important issue. IMO.
