The shutdown is a feature, not a bug

By Liberal Librarian

Here's the thing: Republicans not only are rubbish at governing, but they don't believe in it to begin with.

To a Republican, governing is associated with tyranny. It is an imposition on a "free people", to have laws, regulations, codes. Today's Republican Party is little divorced from Libertarians. Government is not the route by which you bring the most benefit to the the most people, but an oppressive structure which prevents people from living "free" lives.

Of course, this is all rubbish. Republicans are quite happy to impose draconian laws on immigration, reproductive rights, the environment. They are quite happy to benefit their donor class at the expense of the larger commonwealth. They are quite happy to give a sop to their religious storm troopers to keep them onside.

Government is not an evil, per se. It's only evil when it attends to matters which are anathema to modern conservatism.
