(6,288 posts)We wouldn't be here today wishing it were different & STILL trying frantically to figure out how to get there.
We'd be there.
Everyone who drove the message away from a functioning society & govt, & towards what we face today.
Take it fking serious next time.
You have 2 choices in the end. One gets us our better future & one gets us this.
Division got us where we are today.
Take it fking serious next time.

(298,076 posts)Five Democratic senators from states won by President Trump in the 2016 presidential election introduced legislation Friday to withhold pay from members of Congress in the event of a government shutdown.
Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Jon Tester (Mont.), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.), all of whom are up for reelection this year, announced the bill Friday, hours ahead of a government funding deadline.
If members of Congress cant fulfill their basic duty to keep the government open and provide the essential services Americans depend on, then they dont deserve their paychecks, Heitkamp said in a statement. Period.
Stabenow echoed Heitkamps remarks in the statement and vowed to donate her salary in the event of a shutdown even if the bill doesnt pass.
Its wrong that members of Congress would still get paid in the event of a shutdown while paychecks for members of our military could be disrupted, Stabenow said. This bill ensures members of Congress will not get paid and another bill I have cosponsored makes sure our troops will."

(32,103 posts)he would tell Trump and his toadies to stop bashing our intelligence agencies--every last one of them. Which they have been doing ALL YEAR LONG. Mattis needs to STFU.

(10,170 posts)McConnell, slimy as he is, was effective in talking about the average people who lose with a government shutdown and blamed Democrats for holding up funding for immigration reform. It was not true immigration reform that held up the fundingit was protection of DACA, yet Schumer did nothing to make that clear, nor did he really clarify that putting off permanent funding just leaves everyone, including the military, in limbo and costs more to run the government because people cant make long-term decisions. I hope Republicans and Trump get theblame for the shutdown, but Im not sure that Democrats will not be blamed as well. I hope Schumer has a stronger message in the coming days.

(6,129 posts)I have often been critical of Schumer, but thought he did well tonight. His speech after the vote had good sound bites, and the optics were great. Senators Murray and Feinstein seated behind him conveyed a lot with their body language and expressions.

(14,167 posts)Maybe it was the late hour, but he was lacking in passion and conviction. Of course, it's Chuck, so we probably shouldn't look to someone like him for those things. But, it would have been nice to see some emotion and passion (which is what McConnell provided).
The American populace is stupid, as evinced by the millions of idiots who voted for Trump. We have to figure out how to communicate with the ones that can be saved using means other than logic and great oratory.

(6,288 posts)Its never good enough for those who rally still for division.
We are where we are because of it.
Makes ya wonder doesn't it.

(14,167 posts)Not only did he make the news, but his passion causes you to stop and wonder what he is bothered by. Then, the words sink in and you find yourself agreeing. People looked at him (including one of my deplorable, Trump-voting co-workers) and thought -- "He has a point."
That attitude is what will help us win in "red" states and counties. That's why he did a great job supporting Jones in Alabama.
