Secret Memo Was Actually Written by GOP Staffers
January 19, 2018 at 9:35 pm
House Republicans spent the end of the workweek telling everyone who would listen that the American people must be allowed to see a top-secret four-page document that could bring an end to special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into Russian interference with the 2016 elections, the HuffPost reports.
One thing about that document: Republican staffers wrote it.
The document, which alleges abuses of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act during the FBIs quiet counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign in the final months of the 2016 election, was actually compiled by Republican staffers on the House Intelligence Committee. That committee voted along partisan lines this week to allow any member of Congress to take a peek at the document themselves. Republican members soon flocked to a secure room to read the memo written by their allies and then ran to tell the press about it.

(36,827 posts)When the Cold War hawks didn't like it when the CIA said the USSR was swirling the drain, they commissioned Team B and filled it with wingnut hawks like Wolfowitz. Naturally they produced a report saying the USSR was as strong as ever and had a first strike strategy. Then they leaked the report to the press and used it to discredit Carter as being soft on the Soviets. Cold War 2.0 was born and Saint Ronnie gave the military industrial complex over 1 trillion $ multiplied several times over in national debt interest that's still accruing. To this day the rubes still believe Saint Ronnie brought down the Berlin wall when the reality is he insured it's existence for several more years by giving red meat to the Soviet hardliners.
The only real difference today is thanks to Faux news, they don't even have to try that hard to convince the rubes of whatever they want.

(3,505 posts)Dad was in the Air Force missile program. In the 80s the Repubs argued against the START treaty because the Soviet missiles were much larger than the US missiles. The reason, the Soviet missiles were less accurate so they had to carry more nuclear warheads than their American counterparts to ensure target annihilation. The analogy was if you aimed an American missile at the pitcher's mound at Yankee stadium it would hit inside the base paths. The Russian counterpart would be lucky to land inside New York City.
Another reason to doubt North Korean missiles would actually come remotely close to their intended target; it's Rocket Science after all. Not to downplay the results of a launch but if they were able to get within 100 miles of their target I'd be shocked.

(2,947 posts)WHO will make this the top news of the day?
The memo Republican staffers compiled reveals information that is absolutely shocking, sickening, jaw-dropping and worse than Watergate, GOP members of Congress said Thursday and Friday. The document could send government officials to jail, one congressman said. Is this happening in America or is this the KGB? asked another.

written by staffers? "Written" implies created and invented, while "compiled" is more murky. The content could then be based on genuine material.
It probably is all a set-up and a twisty fake-news thing, but I'm waiting for more detail about what this actually is.

(130,043 posts)it's obvious what they did. The Committee (as whole) had the "compiled" data (including classified information) but the GOP members then had their staff take that and write a completely distorted "summary" of the data in order to manufacture their 4-page "secret memo".

(4,533 posts)The secret memo is an opinion essay by Republicans arguing that the grounds used to get a FISA warrant to spy on Trump figures were bogus. But Trump could simply release the affidavit submitted to the FISA court, making speculation unnecessary. He could redact anything classified. If thebasis were the Steele Dossier we could see that. But Trump has refused congressional requests for release of the Affidavit(s). I can think of only one reason for his refusal, that the affidavit(s) are based on legit grounds.

(6,286 posts)after he was caught giving up Israeli intelligence to the Russians in the Oval Office(!) he has carte blanche to declassify anything he wants. So go ahead, Ochre Moron, release it, so 1/3 of the country can laugh at you, 1/3 of the country will have to have surgery after their eyeballs roll back in their sockets hard enough to get stuck, and the other 1/3 can have the pleasure centers of their Fox News brains stroked one more time.

(22,219 posts)Worthless pieces of junk legislators and waste of our taxpayer dollars. I thought that there was more important issues to work on. tRUMP is interrupting the normal course of legislative activities to try and constantly prove everything that he has stated, e.g. Obama was spying on him/etc./trying to discredit the FBI in prep for any more tRUMP-related Mueller indictments etc.
This will come back to bite all of them.

(6,286 posts)And the "New Day" show had some Repub congressman doing the usual tap dance and contortionist act, but at the end of the interview, he bellowed "RELEASE THE MEMO!" I truly had no idea what he was talking about, but said ok, this is clearly some kind of catchphrase du jour, let me google this nonsense. When I saw it *only* mentioned in/on:
Breitbart
The Daily Caller
ZeroHedge
Washington Examiner
BizPac Review
I knew without even digging further it had to be nonsense, and it truly has gone nowhere, as it should. For a party that is actually good at messaging, this was a pretty ham-handed "Look, squirrel!" moment that had to have embarrassed all but the most rabid and ridiculous Republicans. Not to mention that these fools control everything, release it if you want, who the hell is stopping you. Morons.
