My mother was raising us by herself. My brother was about 9 at the time. There was an employment opportunity so we packed up the car and drove. And drove. And drove.
A strange new land. We knew no one. It was the beginning of several moves between apartments. Different schools - 3 different schools for me between 2nd and 6th grade.
What if I were suddenly made to go "home"? Where I "came from"?
What would I do?
Seriously, I don't know ANYONE in Ohio.
🙃 Okay that was a bit snarky (it is accurate though) but I was just trying to make a point. 😕

This place had no Wendy's, Arthur Treature's, or Pringles. We were quickly identified because we asked for "POP".

(2,679 posts)Lived there for 3 days I believe. Then it was off to New Hampshire. Followed by San Antonio TX, Upper Peninsula MI, Denver CO, Montgomery AL, and ended up graduating high school in Orange Park FL. Currently in Winter Park FL, via, Ballston Spa NY, and Hampton Roads VA.
If I was made to go back to my place of birth, I wouldn't know no one, it was a Navy base. I'd be so fucked! I hate snow and lobsters.

(578 posts)but lived in Boston up until I was 11 and then moved to NC. Anyways my parents are from India. I remember going to India for the first time when I was 19 in college and it was a huge culture shock to me being down there. I remember after the first day or two thinking wow there is no way I could live and survive here since I don't know the language and also I feel just out of place. My heart goes out to the DACA people because I feel I have a lot in common with them. The only thing that separates me from them is that I was fortunate to be born in this country. I would be scared shitless if tomorrow the government had the ability to ship me off to India. I can only imagine the fear the DACA people live in everyday.
