Appearing on MSNBCs AM Joy, former Republican National Committee head Micheal Steele plopped the entire government shutdown mess on the doorstep of the White House, accusing no-energy Donald Trump of being an AWOL president.

While Mr. Steele might have moved slightly to the Left of Trump, he is and always has been a get-along Republican.
Our current state of affairs has lurched so far to the Right that it has made it seem that Mr. Steele is a reasonable man. I suggest a little history lesson:

He is not our friend. It's just that we live in such weird times that he seems reasonable now.
Similarly, Nicole Wallace has ascended to a lofty role as an opinion maker at MSNBC. Remember that she was the person responsible for coaching and directing Sarah Palin during John McCain's presidential run:

I'll acknowledge that she claimed to have not voted for McCain/Palin, but so what? She's been a life-long Republican. It's just that now she's cashing in on her experiences.
While I recognize that some Republicans haven't lost their sanity, we've descended into the rabbit's hole when we align ourselves with the "moderate Republicans."

(15,412 posts)Bullshit. My Dad was a Republican until Reagan turned him blue. He was a great man even when he was a Republican.
And not only did she not vote for McCain, she admitted it at the time and she told McCain she would quit if she had to stay with Palin after the Katie Couric interview.

(22,075 posts)I did not suggest that all Republicans, including your father, are assholes. I don't indulge in such broad-brushed insults.
First of all, was your father active in his local Republican party? Both Mr. Steele and Ms. Wallace were very high up in national Republican politics. After all, Mr Steele was the Chairman of the Republican Party and Ms. Wallace was a speech writer for President Bush and a senior aide to the Republican candidate for President. Did your dad have that kind of influence? If not, then your suggestion that I am analogizing two differing perspectives is grossly unfair.
Second, Ms. Wallace did stay with the McCain/Palin campaign AFTER the Katie Couric interview. Later, on Election Day, she confessed to McCain/Palin Campaign Chairman Steve Schmidt-- another MSNBC adoptee-- that on her ballot, she left her vote for the president blank. The implication is that she voted a straight Republican ticket in all of the other races in which she could cast a vote. That's hardly a statement of principle.
Third, I trust that your father was a terrific dad. I base that assessment on the fact that you're on this message board, (wink).
Lastly, any Republican-- like your father-- can redeem themselves if they vote for Democratic candidates. He proves that point. However, did he vote for Carter (1980), Mondale (1984), Dukakis (1988), Bill Clinton (1992), Bill Clinton (1996), Gore (2000), Kerry (2004), Obama (2008), Obama (2012) and Hillary Clinton (2016)?
People who vote like that are Democrats.

(15,412 posts)My dad made me look conservative in his old age. He voted in every election (greatest sin in my family was not voting) but alas he died in 2003 so not after that and after Reagan he NEVER voted for another Republican. He also had a military connected job and was in the reserves (we didn't have much money and being in the reserves gave us access to cheap groceries and a swimming pool!)
I'm also reading The Best and the Brightest, a little late, and there is a part where JFK and gang are trying to figure out which liberal republicans to align with. Liberal Republicans. Yep, I remember them. Can't find an honest moderate any more.
I think Nicole has left the party, and yes, she stayed with McCain, just wouldn't work for Palin after Couric. McCain has his moments, not really a moderate but can be rational at times. Compare his race, when he took on the old lady who was race bating Obama to Trump's campaign if you don't believe me.

(30,824 posts)I am a cup-half-full person, and like to find the positive in people or situations whenever I can. It's a whole lot easier to live with than filling myself with hatred and derision for anyone who doesn't share my views.
When having to listen to Republican viewpoints on the talk shows, I enjoy hearing Steele because he doesn't spout talking points, which makes his opinion of more value (and yes, I do like to hear different opinions). I don't care what his past is; it's not relevant. I'm not joining a Steele cult; I'm just listening to political discussions.

(653 posts)I remember when Mikey was the chairman, and he pissed me off to no end with his GOP talking points and apologies.
If he gets thrown under the bus and never returns I won't be sad.
No quarters from me.
Same goes for Bush the dumber.
I will NEVER forget!

(11,580 posts)I remember how far to the extreme right we used to consider Goldwater or Buckley, for example. I almost kind of miss them.
As PJ O'Rourke said "wrong about almost everything, but at least within normal parameters."
I know he was speaking about HRC, and was, of course, dead wrong, but the quote is still a good one.

(34,546 posts)change is a hoax perpetrated by Al Gore and other assorted "liberals." He ranted and raved for a good 2 minutes while the rest of the panel was open-mouthed in shock. I think this was on Tweety's show about 18 months ago. I've tended to disregard him ever since.
