I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that there is a big portion of the American People that don't even know that we're in a sh*tdown now.
We've gone through sh*tdowns in the past and they always seemed to be resolved one way or another. I don't even know if the majority of the American People even felt the effects of previous sh*tdowns.
So - the cable news channels are relishing in this sh*tdown and it is the story of the day. It pays their bills.
The only way such a sh*tdown will have any real effect is that if the majority of the American People feel and hurt bad from its effect. That will only happen if this drags on for weeks and months.
Maybe this is why Trump said what he tweeted about a sh*tdown. - "what this country needs a "good 'shutdown."
Maybe if we had a prolonged sh*tdown that really hurts. Maybe then we'll be able to work on bipartisan solutions. Maybe then the Dems and Repugs will come together.
Could this be what Trump was going for when he tweeted that tweet.

The last shutdown in 2013 went on for 16 days and I think it cost the government something like 2 billion dollars as a result (vs $0 if they had kept the government open).

(2,396 posts)If memory serves me, there will be a skeleton crew accepting returns but refunds won't be doled out.
That will probably get people's attention.

(6,939 posts)Don't know if that's the same. If it is then many self-employed people--like I used to be don't even mess with taxes until late Feb.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) --
The federal government shutdown has shuttered the Philadelphia sites where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed and the Liberty Bell hangs.
Security guards stood around Independence Hall on Saturday, shooing away people who got too close. A park ranger did the same at the doorway into the building that surrounds the bell.
But the visitors' center at Independence National Historical Park remained open Saturday.
Dozens of visitors still gathered around the cobblestone street that divides the two monuments, snapping photographs of the tall white tower atop Independence Hall. Some also shot photos of the bell, which was visible through a window.
