(171,111 posts)I loved Robert Byrd when he got older.
I adored Ted Kennedy.
I think they both were realists. Warts and all, men of character are hard to find.

(30,784 posts)We have to remember how much leadership in our party is coming from the older, experienced members of our caucus. The young will have time to learn, but they should not expect to take leadership positions away from those who are serving us so well right now. It is wrong to ask those people to step aside.

(57,520 posts)or a Mary Landreau, well its going to have to be a Ted Kennedy. If my choice is a woman equivalent to Teddy or a woman with the obvious potential to be equivalent of being close to Ted, I'm voting for the woman.
I think its important that Congress becomes more reflective of the nation. More women, more people of color, more younger folk.
Teddy and Robert Byrd are dead and I think its time to give women their chance to be the equals of the great male Democrats of the past.
The next President needs to be a Democratic woman. Though there are men, younger than me, like Adam Schiff I have no problem voting for, in which case his running mate needs to be a woman or a non-white male.
I want fewer white geezers like me in office.

(37,648 posts)Not that there's anything wrong with white males. But it's important that everyone have a voice.

(37,648 posts)But people, depending on his/her culture and gender and race, have different perspectives. I may disagree with those perspectives, but when we govern democratically, we should have the different perspectives represented. If we're over-represented by one group, that may lead to a warped sense of priorities that doesn't reflect the population. Plus, if everyone is qualified, it's important that citizens see people like themselves in positions of decision making.
Even if a white male represents my issues the way I want (and many do), it's important that young girls or other races can see at a glance that there are people there like themselves, so they know that they are being represented in some small way. Plus, as role models. It does something to a person's psyche and goals in life to look around and see no one like you in important positions.
I'm particularly impressed, for example, by the black female politicians in Washington. They are time and again the boldest of the groups. They irritate me sometimes, but they are often the ones to speak up first and loudest. Maybe it's because in order to get elected, they had to be bold, brave, and confident from the outset in a way that other groups didn't have to be. They seem to be fearless.

(37,648 posts)My bad. Black women really come to the forefront in the last decade or so. Voting, making a difference, speaking out, running for political office and winning, being bold in Congress.
But let's not forget everyone else who voted. Everyone who voted made a difference.
