Looks like the senate is going to go Nuclear

Top story at CNN.com right now that Trump tweeted to go nuclear. Mulvaney also said they are considering this.

We all know McConnell is Trump’s obedient turtle. This will happen and American democracy will die with it. Corker, Graham, Flake, Collins, et. al aren’t really moderate and will gladly go along with this when push comes to shove.

May they all suffer eternal damnation!

Forgotten after a few days. The media never seems to let anything stick to him. He can nuke the legislative filibuster this week and then give a SOTU that the media fawns all over next week, and this will be forgotten.

As to your question, McConnell can appeal a senate rule at any time and then eliminate it with 50 votes.

It will come back to bite them in the Ass. So far no party in power has wanted to do that because they know that once they are back in the minority they would have no power left. The rules of the senates are voted on by the senate, not cast in stone since they are not part of what is mandated by the constitution.

the rest of you. Consider the source.

Now, Roll Call's headline is, "House GOP Has Message for Senate on Shutdown: Nuke the Filibuster." McConnell is unlikely to take this "advice," but members of the House can use this hot air to fool their constituents, in addition to venting their hard-core frustrations.

Btw, Roll Call also points out, "There are four GOP senators opposed to the current stopgap spending bill. It would take only two to block an effort to change the rules."

And, "Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows also said he doesn’t see the filibuster rules changing." Meadows is the authoritarian leader of more 30 members who basically vote as he tells them to.

On all things Congress I'll take Roll Call over daytime CNN. Heck, I'd believe Roll Call on the weather over CNN's continual drama-mongering to troll greater ratings.

Note that our positions could reverse on November 6 and McConnell be minority leader of 49 senators...

Sun Jan 21, 2018, 04:02 PM

The current split is 51-49.

There are 34 Senate seats being voted on in November 2018. Only 8 are currently held by Republicans. So if the Democrats held every one of the 34 they currently held and won every one of the 8 seats held by republicans, the split would be 59-41, well short of the 67 needed for a "veto proof" majority.

Remember, Trump knows nothing about complex political strategies and the three dimensional chess games that both parties play. McConnell knows the game and he knows such a move would backfire and blow up in his face.

He looks at the polls and he sees the numbers, he reads the news and sees Dems raising to win in red state, and he listens to the pundits talking about a big, beautiful blue wave that might sweep him out of power or severely hamper his ability to do anything in the Senate.

Under the current conditions, McConnell would be a fool to go full nuclear just to appease a know-nothing idiot like Trump. Once enacted, if the Dems regain the Senate, he will have handed them an unprecedented gift that would then allow Dems to pass everything without any Republicans.

Has said no to this now. CNN mentioned nothing in their blaring headline this morning about McConnell and the conference saying no. Huge omission which led to panic on my part.

Anyways, the blue wave has eroded. Our congressional generic lead is now down to just 5 points. That’s enough to pick up 5 or 6 house seats and a bucket of warm spit. We need a strong victory in this shutdown fight to get those numbers back up! Hopefully red-state Dems realize that the road to a Democratic majority in November runs through us winning this fight.

In November, they are anticipated to lose at least the House and maybe the Senate. Like what usually happens 2 years in to every Administration. And Congress.

The best way for them to "push back against history" is to pass into law everything they promised and stand for. To invigorate their base!

Do R's think they will be more successful negotiating with Democrats - or shoving everything they want down our throats?
