from the shutdown debate, pointed out that the GOP was keeping him out of sight "like they were hiding Hannibal Lecter."

(7,440 posts)because of the topics or news being covered. It's the times that are making the commentators relevant.
If Schmidt and Wallace and Frum were on the air and the trending topics were public policy, the programs would loose appeal and viewership because they are classical political conservatives while the main demographic for these shows leans liberal. But this is "country over party" time, and these conservatives are espousing the view that the current GOP and the Executive branch represent an existential threat to the nation. They're correct. But it also goes without saying that these conservatives are also eloquent and talented speakers who are focusing on a return to ethical principles and pride in competency.

(13,776 posts)I've found that I can really respect Republicans who put country before party. Disagreeing with me doesn't automatically make someone evil and wrong And the sincerity with which a few Republicans stand up and call bullshit on their party is really inspiring.
Them to.

I don't think Schmidt is a bad guy, but his ideology is still RW bullshit. I believe part of why he hates trump is because trump is exposing the rotten and dishonest fabric of the GOP of the last 50 years.

(10,113 posts)He was if not complicit, at least not too upset about the god awful swift boating of John Kerry, which I only recently found out about. Remember all the purple heart band aids at the convention? I thought his worst offense was unleashing Palin on us, but no. I didn't realize his sleaze went back to 2004.
I will never be a cheerleader for him regardless of what he says now, which actually isn't much of a heavy lift, sorry.
