Kentucky school shooting: 1 dead, multiple others were wounded

by ALI GOSTANIAN and CORKY SIEMASZKO/JAN 23 2018, 11:58 AM ET

One person was dead and multiple others were wounded Tuesday when gunfire erupted at a Kentucky high school, prompting panicked students to run for their lives.

Marshall County High School in Benton was on lockdown and a suspect was in custody as paramedics tended to the injured and wounded, state police reported.

Meanwhile, teachers and counselors tried to calm terrified students as parents and relatives raced to the scene to collect the kids, who described the chaos in the classrooms when the bullets started flying.

"They were busting down the gates and fences just to get out," Shea Thompson, whose teenage siblings were inside the school when the shooting started, told NBC News.

This tragedy was visited on a Red State. It won't change the way they think about guns one bit.

Just throw the victim in a pit and move on.

creepy strangers away... but more likely it makes them more like shooting galleries for the students who sneak in a gun. No place to run.

We need to do a better job at helping teens to get through the highly emotional puberty and young adult phase of their lives. Not sure what the shooter's motive was here but it is so often the case that it is either peer group bullying or a broken relationship or feeling of exclusion.

Locked inside all day, while the rich send their kids to private prep schools where they’re not treated like convicts. Police inside watching, doors locked, passes needed to pee or visit the library all have become the same environment as a prison, while the rich preppy kids can roam their campus, free and not feel restricted. Sure, there are rules at prep schools too, but the their students are respected and not suspected.

School shootings were extremely rare. That was what made Columbine so huge at the time. Now it seems like these shootings are just another crime story.
