What made them tick? Hamburg, in the 1930's. A crowd of people. A new built ship is leaving the harbor of Hamburg. The workers have lifted their arms and hands for the "Hitler-Gruss". But one is not doing so.
It is August Landmesser. In 1931 he had decided to become a member of the NSDAP. But since the beginning of 1935 the 25-years-old man planned to marry Irma Eckler who was three years younger.
In summer 1935, they both found out, that Irma, according to the "Nürnberger Gesetze" ("Neuremberg Laws"
, was seen as a Jewess. Thus, Alfred as a non-Jew was not allowed to marry her.
August and Irma had two daughters. The daughters survived, their parents did not.
One of the daughters, Irene, has documented the story of the persecution of her family, which was never be allowed to live as a family, as a case study. She published her book in German and English language, and she permitted us to bring her story to the web. Here you shall find the English version...
