Perhaps this has already been asked.. But has anyone referenced the old saw, "follow the money"?
As information on this policy and actions have filtered out, and after the initial "who the hell takes kids away from their parents?" moments.. I drifted to the practical aspects of this. If a family is incarcerated together, the parents will take care of their kids. That's what parents do. But if if you separate children from their parents, Not only do you need a guard for the parents, but you also need another facility, and guards, and caregivers for minor children. It seems like a terrible waste of taxpayer resources.
Which leaves me wondering.. who is making money off of this process?

(3,515 posts)parents in gender-specific facilities, maybe even just fairly large rooms and the children together in other gender-specific facilities. It may be cheaper than providing housing appropriate for a family or a mother with children.

(13,924 posts)would provide "appropriate housing for a family or a mother?
Or that they can provide 24/7 adequate care for a 2 year old and seperately for its mother for less than putting them together?
I have a very hard time believing that.

(3,515 posts)a hearing before deportation. That is why I say this. For example, you can just have a male guard in a male unit or a female guard in a female unit. With children or families, you would have to be more careful about staff, education, healthcare, etc., I would imagine.
It's pretty impersonal housing.
I don't know if there ever was housing for families waiting for deportation.
It has been quite a number of years, and my memory could be wrong, but I am wondering whether families were ever housed together. I am unaware of it but I may have simply not known. Didn't the Juvenile Hall used to have housing for children who were born here and therefore citizens but whose parents have been deported? Does anyone know whether they have been placed in foster homes after the deportation of their parents?
