It is ridiculous to believe any specific thing happened. For 'reasons' she has been out of the public eye. I would say those reasons amount to something. What that something might be? Any answer provided to that question is pure speculation. That's probably a long winded way to say I agree.

It's another for posters here to state things like "We haven't seen Melania for 22 days...Trump must be beating her!!" With absolutely NO proof of evidence to back it up.

It is not unusual to wonder why a First Lady who lives in the WhiteHouse has not been seen for almost a month now.

But, she has assumed the position and title of First Lady, including the considerable benefits that provides. So, I think if she is going "off grid" for some period of time they could at least be honest about it.

The DU post that asserted something specific had happened IS a problem, I would agree, since it poses this outcome with no proof. That should not be the case. Wondering whether she's vacationing with Baron, on the other hand, or even that she might be seeking privacy for personal medical matters is not maligning her.

The administration put out a tweet that pretty clearly was not written by Melania, though it might well have been put out by her staff. So for the public (and the Main Stream Media) not to wonder why is pretty unrealistic. It needn't be ugly, disrespectful nor conspiracy.-driven.

She's the first lady.. Imagine Michelle disappearing for three weeks, or any first lady in my memory for that matter. Even while Bill was exposed for all his cheating, Hillary remained front and center...

And here is why. Every day on DU someone is speculating about something. The fact is that even though we have some hints and some indictments, etc, about the Mueller investigation, we do not know the entirety of it. Yet......there are probably 30-50 speculative threads on here every day about where it may be heading, who is next and so forth.
I do think that a person's health issue is an area where we need to tread lightly. I doubt there is a "liberal" website anywhere who has not run this story. I think we should have some decorum and not be mean-spirited, but no need to ignore it either.
I enjoy DU, but a lot of what shows up here starts as a report of some kind, followed by dozens of replies that often are pure speculation.

but I am thoroughly engrossed, amazed, fascinated and obsessed with this. She is FLOTUS after all. I know we all should be concerned with Flint, PR, Russia, trade wars and the mid terms, but this story is compelling to me.

As far as I'm concerend, her level of engagement is entirely up to her. Yes, it's tradition for the president's wife to fill the paid position of First Lady, but it isn't legally required. If necessary, a president could hire anyone they wanted to do the job. Mind you, this is different than 'were paying her to do a job and no one's seen her for 3 weeks'; I'd admit that as a taxpayer this sort of concerns me and I hope sincerely that she's ok.

But if she wanted to, she's absolutely free to take a SecSvc agent and her kid and park herself in her home in New York and never step foot in DC for the remainder of her worthless husband's term.

Would any of us hold it against her that she doesn't want to be near his white-trash ass?

The small staff used to consist of a social secretary and a secretary to answer mail. She, or rather the potus, also gets a household allowance, out of which they are to see to things like groceries and the upkeep of the house they live in.

She's not "our employee," and never has been. She is expected to be the hostess for her husband's events, and to plan them (which is, contrary to some opinion here, actually a complex job). But she is NOT required to do any of this by statute, law, or the Constitution. It's the usual unpaid women's work in support of the husband as it has always been.

In other words, she can bow out if she wants to, and there is precedent.

If and when we ever elect a female president, a paid position will have to be created, because First Gentleman is certainly not going to do all of these things outside the usual male skillset, and for free.

How I wish we were experiencing our First First Gentleman! I would have enjoyed Bill's attempt to do the wifely duties!

Work and some expenses are covered. But to me it’s a sexist holdover to expect them to serve without pay.

We have very little to go on. However -- and this is where my eyebrows raised -- the Don's Famiglia is having a board meeting at Camp David. Only the favored children (no Eric, but Tiff is a surprise), only Ivanka's spouse. No Melania. No grandkids or Barron -- this is clearly business without even the pretense of a family outing.

So even I am compelled to ask why.

What about all the times we thought 'this is it! tRump is finally going down!' but so far it hasn't happened. Will tRump ever get removed from office for the crimes he has committed? Who knows? We can only speculate with each new piece of evidence that we are presented with. So while we wait and speculate as to whether tRump will ever be held accountable for all the crimes he has committed we might as well speculate on what happened to Malania.

Melania might just be keeping a low profile,

However, it is rather curious that it has been so long. The first lady, whether she likes it or not, is a public figure. It is highly unusual for her to be so absent for so long.

It is also interesting, and maybe worrisome, that this disappearance started with Melania in the hospital.

I would think it would be in everyone's best interest to cast the speculation away by a simple appearance, if nothing else to let us know she is alright
