This is far more than just a commentary on Trump and his NFL antics: it gets to the heart of Trump's behavior. Read the whole thing.

The people mounting the protests have made the same simple and humane points for years and have been answered only with the laziest umbrage and bad faith, which is more or less the response that such protests elicit in America. But Trump also hasnt changed his broader position; he is not listening or learning or changing, because those are not things he does. He is pushing and pushing and pushing at this issue because that is what he does, and because he is nothing without something to push against. There is no compromise to make. Trump wants to become the world, to erase and expunge everything from it that is not him or about him. A generation of the worst and most hard-hearted people that this country has ever produced are lined up outside the church he has opened, and they are willing to leave everything outside in order to gain entry. Its the only way in. Its the only way there will be enough room.

Trump doesnt honor anything on Earth more than himself. The republic for which all this stands is an abstraction in which he transparently has no interest, or anyway nothing that hed put above even his pettiest personal or business interest. He is not sincerely offended by black or brown players performing an act of protest during a song so much as he is offendedaffronted, sure, but more deeply threatenedby their disobedience in doing so after having been very clearly told that it bothered their betters. He is not alone in this, but here as elsewhere Trump has backed into being a perfect avatar. He is not the only person who believes that people protesting against unrelenting, unjust, unaccountable state violence are doing so primarily to be annoying, but he is the only one who can get those other disordered people to pile into a convention center to listen to him interrupt himself and complain about it for a couple hours.
Trump doesnt understand loyalty in any meaningful way, because he is not capable of it in any meaningful way. There is no other person on Earth who really seems to mean much to him outside of what they say about or could potentially do for him. But he definitely has an understanding of loyalty, and that is roughly as something that an employee owes an employeras a thing that runs up and only up, and is non-negotiable, and is in the end about always and without complaint doing what youre told. Among Trumps many strange rhetorical tics is using like a dog as the most devastating of insults, which is weird enough when you consider how awesome dogs are but which seems more significant in light of the fact that his understanding of what loyalty looks like is otherwise synonymous with what dogs show their masters.

(11,885 posts)This is about revenge from trump because they refused to allow him into the NFL years ago. No matter what they do he'll keep this up against them intentionally doing things to hurt them. Owners and the NFL screwed up now, and gave into this con man in the oval office, and should instead start filing lawsuits for damages, and before he continues to hurt them even more. He won;t stop until they stand up to him, unlike the Republicans in Congress are doing, and being voted out of office at record paces. These owners will see their revenues drop from there decision to bow down to him, and appease his wishes. They sided with a tyrant instead of our Constitutional right to protest, and trump has never said anything about why are they protesting, because he wants them hurt by police, and be as brutal as they want. That should be the issue addressed, not banning them from kneeling. A President for the American people would. Watch now how long before he escalates against them even more from abusing his powers to hurt them with. They gave into him, now will pay for it because it'll just get a lot worse.

(5,547 posts)Theyre obsessed with the non-whites / non-Christians supposedly taking over *their* country. Theyre perpetually aggrieved.
I was listening to Fox News Radio the other day, and it was obvious what the host was griping about. It wasnt the kneeling, or the national anthem. He couldnt say what he really wanted to say, since this isnt the 1950s, so he danced around it.

(43,049 posts)We all know Trump redefines "self-centered".
What wasn't mentioned was his relationship with the NFL. He tried to buy an NFL team, but the rules say the rest of the owners have to approve a new one, and they considered him too much of an asshole to let him in the club.
So, he started his own league, and promptly trashed it when he realized it might actually take work to make a go of it-- exactly how he ran every one of his businesses. He cashed out and left his investors, other team owners, and players with the bills.
I'm not sure how this history fits in with his thinking, but I suspect he's afraid to take on the league itself, so is taking it out on the players.

(12,467 posts)orange shit-barge. I doubt most fans give a rat's ass about if the song is even played or not. In fact, I suspect the general attitude is "Play the song faster so we can get on with the game."
In U.K., there is (or maybe was) a practice of playing God Save The Queen" after the last showing of a film. The idea was to get out of the theater before that started so that you didn't have to stand for a minute.
At that time, there were only 30 or 40 seconds of credits so this resulted in a problem if the house was crowded.

It's entirely up to us to stop this.

(2,062 posts)Everything and everyone has an end point. 2020 may be Trumps endpoint, if not, then 2024. Lets hope we as the democratic party can bring the Senate and House to our majority and effectively begin to get this country back to its good standing, or at least try to muzzle this rabid dog...
