To our allies: bipartisan majorities of Americans remain pro-free trade, pro-globalization & supportive of alliances based on 70 years of shared values. Americans stand with you, even if our president doesnt.

(9,426 posts)following his "lead" then? They go along with everything he does. McCain talks out of both sides of his mouth. Some "hero" Supposedly a maverick, yet kissed Dubya's ass, now tRumps. Where was he when his opinion counted? Even now, at this late stage of his life, he will not fully disavow the great leader. Republican to the bitter end.

(37,648 posts)They don't defend him, like his supporters (Devin Nunes & those) do. But they do what party faithfuls do: they vote for tax cuts, they vote for their party bills, etc.
Like it or not, Trump is their leader. Just as if Dems had a leader they didn't want as President. They're not going to not vote on Dem bills because they don't like him. They're not going to side with Republicans (at least not many of them) to go against their own leader. Republicans are even more so party driven and party loyal. And the old-time Republicans are not in control. The alt-right is in control, and there are too many Trump supporters among the voters for the public to support dissing Trump. Just a handful have been brave enough to make public statements against him. Flake, McCain, and a couple of others.
McCain's a Republican. The old party faithful are Republicans, who believe in a different set of policies and ideology than the Democrats. That's what democracies are all about. That doesn't mean they are bad people, by definition.
As McCain said about Obama, "He's a fine man, a family man. We just disagree on policies."

The daughter of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., accused the president of using her father to distract from his own political problems
by Jonathan Allen / May.31.2018 / 12:30 PM ET
WASHINGTON Meghan McCain fired back at President Donald Trump on Thursday, accusing him of attacking her father, cancer-stricken Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to distract from his own political problems.
"It's really good politics that they're doing right now," the younger McCain said ABC's "The View" on Thursday. "Because they are trying to change the narrative ... not talking about all the other bad things that are going on."
Her remarks come two days after Trump ripped into her father at a political rally in Nashville, Tennessee, and less than three weeks after White House aide Kelly Sadler dismissed the senator's significance because he's "dying anyway."
In Nashville, Trump roused his crowd by going after the elder McCain for his vote last year against a bill that would have overturned Obamacare.
"We had it done folks, it was done, and then early in the morning somebody turned their hand in the wrong direction," Trump said. "The person that voted that way only talked repeal and replace. He campaigned on it."
Though Trump didn't mention McCain by name, the audience wasn't confused about his target.
"There was boos," Meghan McCain said. "It was elicited by President Trump at the rally."
Bad blood has defined the relationship between Trump and John McCain, but the president had been silent on his political adversary since Sadler's remark was reported earlier this month.
Meghan McCain said Sadler reneged on a vow to apologize.
"I was promised an apology, Kelly Sadler publicly to my family. I did not receive that," Meghan McCain said. "This is not an administration that's capable of apologizing."

(905 posts)She is still defending him and will defend him. She married Ben Domenech and it is clear that he writes her blue cards on The View. We are all disgusted by her.
She can't even have her own opinion and just Friday she was railing at Joy that the Dems don't have their own plan to satisfy middle America. Like she even knows where that is and has any idea of not paying a bill, or not eating, not having health care etc. She will regret staying silent like the rest of the GOP. What kills me is that neither side likes her. The GOP can't stand her.

It's time we started making that clear, to hopefully limit the damage the orange twit does while squatting in the White House.

(9,426 posts)He is doing what they have wanted for many, many years. Destroying the middle class. Taking away Social Security and Medicare. Any program that ordinary citizens depend on. Giving the rich even more tax cuts. They are like reverse Robin Hoods, take from the poor, give to the rich. The greedy rich. So, who cares about the destruction he is accomplishing? They probably are hoping for a Democratic president to come along and clean up this mess. It is the gop way, isn't it?

(9,446 posts)He came to Australia in 2017 to basically say that "we all know there's a fuckwit in the WH, help us get through this"...
This is from his speech in May 2017...
I realise that some of President Trumps actions and statements have unsettled Americas friends. They have unsettled many Americans as well. There is a real debate underway now in my country about what kind of role America should play in the world. And frankly, I do not know how this debate will play out.
What I do believe, and I do not think I am exaggerating here, is that the future of the world will turn, to a large extent, on how this debate in America is resolved.
That is why I and others are fighting so hard to ensure that America stands by our allies and remains an active, principled leader in the world. And we cannot do it alone. We need your help, my friends. Now more than ever, we Americans are counting on Australia and our other allies to stick with us ... to encourage us to stay true to who we are at our best ... and to remind us always just how much is at stake

(9,426 posts)before or after he took all that money from the NRA and Russia?? I do not trust McCain, he is a little turncoat. Says one thing, does the opposite. I still remember him calling Dubya "dumb as a stump" then hugging him with that blissful look on his face. How about the birthday cake, too? Republican to the very core.

As for the deplorables, Trump could take a massive dump on the headstone of Audie Murphy, as long as he follows it up by saying racist shit about Mexicans, they'll line up to drink Trump's bathwater.

Both of them are low on the I.Q. totem pole. The gop does NOT welcome intelligent people into their fold. You have to be sneaky, greedy and not too bright to be accepted by the gop.

(54,519 posts)As long as he still can, he could REALLY make a bold move and switch parties. Not only would it give his arch-enemy McTurtle a smack in the face, it would also make McTurtle instant minority leader.
All he has to do is use the line of Jim Jeffords: "I didn't leave the Republican Party. It left me."
One last grand act of true patriotism and heroism.

(5,106 posts)I would have voted for the late Soupy Sales or one of the Three Stooges over Trump. Where is he getting the unilateral power to screw so much up? (2,185 posts)I see many posts here lauding McCains bravery and shake my head. This is pretty much a textbook case of slacktivism; a tepid online statement of support with no follow-up actions.
Yes, he disagreed with Trumps actions. This only stands out because the Republicans are the Stepford party.
But has he been speaking out against Trump consistently? No. Has he argued against or voted against Trump policies (with the exception of his ACA repeal vote)? No. Is he urging others in his party to oppose Trump? No. Is he going to leave the Republican Party? No.
McCain is not acting as a statesman, let alone an ally. He is just an old man trying to get into heaven, or at least secure a better spot in the history books.

As chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I insist the president impose sanctions on Russia and treat NATO allies as allies, and if he refuses, my committee will subpoena his financial records to determine whether he is spoiling the alliance for corrupt reasons.
