BREAKING: Trump tweets North Korea no longer nuclear threat.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on the summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (all times local):

6:15 a.m.

President Donald Trump says on Twitter, “There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea,” as he returns to the United States after his historic summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump says on Twitter that “everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office.”

He says before he took office, “people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea,” and President Barack Obama said North Korea was the nation’s biggest problem.

Trump and Kim signed an agreement to work toward denuclearization, but it appears weaker than past deals that failed. Independent experts estimate North Korea now has enough fissile material for 20 to 60 bombs, and it has tested missiles that could potentially deliver a nuclear weapon to the U.S. mainland.

Update

...................................

Good God he is a total moron, they still have all their nuclear weapons and are not giving it up for no one, its the only leverage they have.

Trumps..Mission accomplished......

It's not about "liberals" vs "conservatives." Those are dumb words for bullies to throw around like rocks. "Liberal" means "free" and all Americans want freedom. Everyone needs to conserve the biosphere so we can breathe and farm for food. So these words can be applied to everyone in different ways. The REAL division in this country is between the patient and the impatient. Only the patient do their research and don't rely on single, "infotainment" news sources. In a sense it breaks down as a struggle between the rational and the irrational.

Iran & N Korea did not beg for free nukes. They are spending their own money. So did India, Pakistan & all others who possess nukes. My question is what world law forbids ANY COUNTRY to develop nukes if they want to. Brazil, Japan, S Korea, Italy, Spain, etc have the means to manufacture nukes.

And stop bringing Hitler in to every issue. None of the countries above are killing Jews or any other people. That is an irrelevant and illogical point.

What first hand information you have about people killed in N Korea? Russia & China have killed 1000 times more people in their own country than N Korea. But you seem to be fine with their nukes.

We are the only western country to have practiced slavery and the only country in the world to have nuked 2 populated cities and incinerated civilians with radiation. And yet you seem to be OK with us having nukes.

N Korea has never bombed any foreign country, and never sent its soldiers all over the world to fight. Wait a minute, it is we who have 800 military bases all over the world in foreign countries, not N. Korea!

No exceptions! By definition, a dictator holds on to power by killing all opposition.

Since your short term memory seems to be on weak side,
let me repeat what I said in previous posts.

Dictators in Russia & China have killed more of their own people by orders of magnitude than Kim Jong Un has. But I do not see you posting opposition to nukes in Russia or China.

And then you compare Kim Jong Un to Hitler? Has Kim killed any Jews or anyone based on religion? NO!!

Current dictators in Iran have killed all followers of Shah, who were of course 100% Iranians. But we made a deal with Iran.

Pakistan has 200+ nukes, and 80% of Pakistani people sympathize or support Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda & Taliban. And Pakistan has had a string of dictators since inception in 1947. I am far more worried about those nukes falling in hands of religious extremists than from N Korea.

75. they have to be regarded as a nuclear power
Thu Jun 14, 2018, 12:14 PM
Jun 2018

But the nuclear threat part was always problematic. The idea that they would attack a US ally with nuclear weapons never was the issue. It's only when you want to attack them or overthrow their regime, that the deterrence aspect of nuclear weapons enters into the picture. It would be suicide for the North to ever use those weapons. However that is how one defector described it, a doomsday machine that would go into effect, if North Korea was successfully attacked and "decapitated."

The more substantial issues are achieving a more or less permanent security arrangement in the area, managing great power competition on the peninsula and in northeast Asia, avoiding nuclear proliferation, managing the Korean nationalist movement for eventual unification, and resolving and preserving Japanese security in the face of lingering Korean and Chinese resentments against Japan and territorial disputes.

Robert Carlin has noted that a request for a withdrawal of US forces from the area has been notably absent from North Korean demands lately. It is the nature of those forces and what they are doing that is the issue.

Now that the North Korean demand is seen as not having war exercises with forces of strategic significance on their doorstep, practicing the destruction of North Korea, the response from the Pentagon advocates is, "What about China?" This is the real issue in the region, and always has been, great power competition for hegemony in the area. Not too far removed from the historical situation in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
