AP Analysis: Trump retreats from US moral leadership stance

WASHINGTON (AP) — Beaming in the moments after his summit with Kim Jong Un, President Donald Trump was asked about North Korea’s history of human rights horrors. “It’s rough,” he allowed. Then he added, “It’s rough in a lot of places, by the way. Not just there.”

Trump’s verbal shrug in Singapore represented a striking change from the way U.S. presidents have viewed their job, a shift from the nation’s asserted stance as the globe’s moral leader in favor of an approach based more on trade-offs with adversaries and allies alike.

Heather Conley, vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the impact of Trump’s upbeat meeting with Kim and his effusive description of the potential of the relationship with North Korea — which has often threatened the U.S. with pre-emptive nuclear attack — was all the more jarring as it came days after his bruising encounter with America’s closest Western allies at the G-7 in Canada. She said it would have repercussions for how the United States was viewed around the world.

“When the president gives a thumbs-up with the leader of a regime that has killed thousands, that’s a strong and discouraging message to those who are trying to support human rights around the world,” she said. “It places a question before all Americans as they witness two very different summits with two very different kinds of leaders: Who are we? What are the values that we stand for? Are we exceptional or are we no better than any other nation?”

History will remember them for their degeneracy.

The Singapore Surrender, and the way Trump slobbered all over the murdering NK dictator, will be an image of disgrace for decades to come.
