...this is sublime, roiling the rightward tilt of Rubin's political compass.

An open letter to John Bolton
by Jennifer Rubin
____Could you in your wildest dreams have imagined escorting a president to a grin-and-grab propaganda show with Kim, and watching the president proclaim that the leader of the most repressive regime on the planet, one that starves and imprisons hundreds of thousands of people, loves his country? I dont think even President Barack Obama went that far in his overly optimistic rhetoric about Iran rhetoric that you routinely mocked.
Youve known for years, John, that diplomatic progress is not possible here because Pyongyangs purpose is not to open a dialogue for the umpteenth time with Seoul, Washington or Tokyo, but to conceal and distract from its menacing activities. You excoriated the media, for goodness sake, for getting giddy about North Koreas participation. When P. T. Barnum allegedly said theres a sucker born every minute, he may have been understating the problem, you wrote. Not that youd know it from our establishment media. So what exactly does that make President Trump?
Trump has said all sorts of things youve decried in the past. Trump trusts Kim. He even cooed, Anybody that takes over a situation like he did, at 26 years of age, and is able to run it, and run it tough I dont say he was nice or I dont say anything about it he ran it. He has murdered relatives and enslaved his own people, mind you. He admired Kims real estate. As an example, they have great beaches. You see that whenever theyre exploding their cannons into the ocean, right? I said, Boy, look at the view. Wouldnt that make a great condo behind?'
He tweeted this morning: Just landed a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience. North Korea has great potential for the future! That kind of delusional thinking used to disqualify someone for public office, in your mind.
And on and on. Surely you must have been cringing, all too aware that not only is Kim getting a laugh at Americas expense but also Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin also must think Trump a fool.
Nevertheless, you serve and defend this president...

(82,849 posts)Bwahahahaha! Does Jennifer Rubin actually think that John Bolton possesses anything that a non-psychopath would recognize as a conscience?
Bolton wants to get a war on, and he's not too picky about the where, only the when. If his boss wants to make nice with North Korea this week, Bolton's just fine with that; narrows down the choices of where to launch the missiles, and Trump doesn't do well with too many choices. Trump's like the kid in McDonald's whose Mom tells him he can have a hamburger or a cheeseburger. She knows that if she opens up the whole menu to him, he'll go nuts, unable to make a choice. But culling the options down to two, she'll get an answer out of him.
Bolton's the Mom in McDonald's, narrowing down Trump's choices to a manageable number. Sure, it would be great to blast the bejesus out of North Korea, but if that's off the table, Bolton can pare down the choices.

(86,024 posts)...but it's not a small thing that Bolton's lifetime of reactionary right-wing political rhetoric has been severely compromised by his senior association with Trump and his North Korea policy.
If he's not cringing, he's sucking up decades of blather about 'axis of evil' empires and the rest. It makes perfect sense to come at Bolton and Trump for their hypocrisy. Republicans who've made Russia and North Korea their boogeymen for decades also need to be confronted with their hypocrisy.
It's just not enough to stand back and tell ourselves that we already know who these people are. They need to be exposed for the world to see.
Remind me again what Bolton actually got from this royal suck-up. Every other president appears to have gotten more concessions (hollow as they are), without the 'touch' and 'feel' session Trump had with the NK dictator.
