We are all immigrants

My father came to this country in 1962. He was fleeing a horrible situation in Egypt at the time.

My family is Jewish. And because of a war between Israel and Egypt in 1956, the Egyptian government forced my entire family out of the country. My father, grandfather and all of my Aunts & Uncles were sent to France (they all had French passports). My Grandmother did not have a French Passport. She was an Italian National and was forced to leave her family and shipped to Italy. She eventually met up with the rest of the family in France, but it was a really trying time for everyone involved. My family was made up of 3 sons and 7 daughters.

My father was the oldest male child. He was only 19 years old. He was told that he had to take care of the family now. My Grandfather was older and very sick at this time. My father became the man of the house.

In 1961, my family first got the news that they had been sponsored to come to this country. It was a program through Jewish Family Services. They placed my father in a home with 2 of the nicest people I've ever met in Hartford Connecticut (my father still talks and writes to them all of the time). They helped my father get a job as a plumber. He used to tell stories about how he got addicted to Soap Operas to learn English.

Eventually, my father was able to get the rest of the family sponsored to enter the US. I will always love the Jewish Family Services and what they have done to help Jewish people around the world. They were there for my family. If it weren't for people like them, I would not be here today.

Today, I weep for what is happening on our border. We have an uncaring man in the White House who is using children to get what he wants - a wall. I've been saying it all weekend long, but FUCK TRUMP. There is a special place in hell for people who support this man and his horrendous policies.

And yes we are all Immigrants. We are all here from one place or another. We are either first or second or even third generation Americans. You work with people who are here because of circumstances beyond their control. There are people who come to this country for some sort of asylum because where they came from it is just too much to bear. My father was one of these people. My maternal Great-Grandparents were one of these people (they fled the Ukraine before the Russian Revolution). We are all Immigrants. It's what makes this country what it is.

Here is my tweet from Saturday when I was really upset after hearing another supposed "Christian" quote the bible:

We must all #BeBetter!
