Every word he speaks is true.

The government* of the United Statesthe thuggish, dishonest and unfathomably cruel administration* that we elected to run the countryhas chosen the history of which it will be a part. It is the history of the auction block, of the state-sponsored kidnapper, of the God-alibi-ed prison, of the rattling cattle cars, headed east. That is the history of which the government, and all the people in it, have chosen to be a part. This includes the people who dreamed up this policy, the people who are enforcing this policy, and anyone who isnt doing anything to stop it. They will be the defendants in the future proceedings, the villains in the future novels, and the monsters in a thousand future nightmares. We choose the history of which we are a part.
Choose.

(116,003 posts)But at least there are people like Charlie Pierce and many others - even Laura Bush - who are speaking out. Every time Trump does something despicable I wonder whether it will be enough to get people - especially GOP members of Congress - to turn against him. I don't know whether this will be the thing, since the GOP seems completely impervious to appeals to their useless consciences that they seem to have locked away somewhere. But maybe, even if their damned souls remain unaffected, they'll at least wise up to the horrendous "optics." For Trump's hard-core base, abusing Latino immigrants, even children, isn't a bug but a feature. But this does seem to be causing outrage in many other quarters; I hope it's enough.

(5,403 posts)I want to act, but have no idea what to do. I am in Tennessee, and own my own business, so traveling to Texas is not feasible. My senators are deaf republicans corker and alexander who stay in lockstep.
This has me absolutely enraged...

A list of these organizations and other ways to help is here: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/06/how-you-can-fight-family-separation-at-the-border.html Write letters to the editor, rant on Facebook, do whatever you can to keep the issue in the spotlight.

Let's pile on and change the dialog. Because out of a thousand infuriating things this administration has done, this one takes the cake. IT CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO STAND AND WE HAVE TO OPPOSE IT IN EVERY WAY HUMANLY POSSIBLE.

(632 posts)I mentioned in a different thread that the Democratic Town Committee where I live is planning to issue a resolution about this, with the state reps, and I'm contacting my friends who belong to churches or synagogues to get their place of worship to do the same. Let's all get the various clubs we belong to publicly condemn this atrocity.
Another idea - flood the local newspapers with letters to the editor. You can set up a letter writing group.
Yes, I know it's not much, but it's still better than nothing. And the louder the outcry, the better the chance.

(11,885 posts)Will follow each and every one of these who acted to do this , supported this, and condoned this will have that smell on them forever , where ever they go , and i hope they are reminded of what they did to this country. Abusing children like this intentionally to hurt them is sickening.
