NEW: I just spoke with the former head of US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) – He tells me that he expects hundreds of separated children will never be reunited with their parents. They will be lost in the system. Orphaned by the US Govt'.

He says that during his time at ICE there were rare cases where children could not be reunited with their parents. Separation becomes permanent. This was *before* Trump’s policy that has so far separated 2300+ children from their parents.

He adds there are two separate legal tracks for children and adult migrants who are detained. Adults can be deported within weeks to their home countries, children may be left in the US for years in foster care or with relatives.

"there’s very little that we in the United States can do to deter people who are fleeing this horrific violence in Central America to stop them trying to come here" John Sandweg told me.

“there’s so little that we can do that’s worse than what they are facing” Sandweg says, based on his experience at ICE.

"if the administration doesn’t reunify these children very quickly, which is logistically very hard to do, you’re going to have a lot of permanent separations."

One final thought from the former head of ICE: "I don’t understand why we’re doing this. From a border security perspective this adds nothing to securing our borders”

On child separation, former acting director of ICE John Sandweg said "the other thing that scares me Jackson, is I’m not seeing any signs that this was a planned policy change ... and I think that’s being reflected by these horrific detention facilities"

I've never been more serious...give me 5 of those kids being held in makeshift prisons. I'll take care of them until I find their parents, or care for them like they were my own. Give me those kids!

Nope. Return children to their parents not pass them out to strangers. But I bet some of the legal assistance groups could use your help!

Like I said, "I'll take care of them until I find their parents..." A foster situation is better than a prison, especially for innocent minors.

You're right and I understood what you were saying. Some people are so quick to be offended by stuff like that.

Some people are so quick to arrogantly assume themselves right and entitled to somebody else's stolen children. A better focus is to help restore a family.

Thank you for saying this. It is clear many of these children will be funneled into adoptions. Pence is all about helping adoption agencies make $$$. It is part of the same awful scheme of judgment & idea that some deserve kids & some don’t. These kids should be with family.

He offered to help care for kids *while fighting to reunite them w their parents* so they don’t have to endure being caged by ICE. If my son was abducted by the state, you better believe I’d want someone kind to foster him til we were reunited vs keep him in a concentration camp

Btw - here’s some info on fostering refugee children anyone serious about doing this, while working to reunite them with their parents: http://www.usccb.org/about/children-and-migration/foster-care/index.cfm

This is institutional violence against both parents & children. Most of the kids can be expected to be damaged mentally, emotionally, physically the rest of their lives, the younger the more traumatized. A % of the kids will adapt poorly, emerging as psychopaths. We ALL suffer.

Foster & adoptive parents of these displaced kids can be expected to face the tragic problem of kids w/deep-seated anger & fear with no outlet. Seriously emotionally damaged kids require ENORMOUS psychological therapy & social services. Ask those familiar w/older-child adoptions.

I can personally vouch for what you’re saying. This will have a devastating psychological impact on every single one of these children.

It could easily by maintained by an external organization with the samples collected from family members’ saliva by legal aids and volunteer workers — assuming of course that they’re actually able to see all the children.

Unfortunately even a couple of weeks apart from your parents at a young age will be leave permanent trauma for the rest of a child’s life.

to being "lost in the system". Older children have a memory and a mouth and would be more troublesome if they are unsatisfied with efforts to re-unite them with family. Babies have no one to protect them from the system.

families to raise.

Trump did say Democrats only wanted the immigrants to come so they could vote for Democrats. Yeah, it's a standard GOP talking point but these aren't normal times. I don't put anything past them.

But if you pull a Francoist Spain or do what the U.S. government did to the children of Native peoples, forcibly adopting them out to white families - then you can strip them of their culture and indoctrinate them into your way of thinking.

There are other examples.
