The OP overestimates Trump's ability to control the press on this. There's been talk that he's going to fire Mueller. Guessing that's about the only thing, short of having the military invade Canada or nuking Iran, that could divert a fair share of attention from Trump's persecution of children for political advantage.

I think a full plan of more hate is afoot and this story broke earlier than the administration wanted it to. The calling up of immigration court staff next month has something to do with it. I think they were planning an enormous mass deportation in the next two months and were going to sell it bigly. I think that was their timing. They are now trapped in a box.
