(36,567 posts)Tell me how the Democratic Party is not going to shift even further to the right if dissatisfied republicans join the party. I seem to be one of the few on this site that is appalled that a career republican is running as a democrat for Al Franken's old seat. WTF, dems?
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend." I think we should be careful how far we take that platitude.

(6,943 posts)We are not born Democrat or Republican, we all associate based on common ideals and values. To be a Republican, you have to be rich. And in 90% of all cases, being rich means being born rich. But to be a Democrat, anyone who shares our common ideals and values---regardless of wealth--- can be a Democrat.

Yes, & for all of his adult life Painter has associated with the GOP. (And Steve Schmidt & Nicole Wallace & others) Now suddenly, when four decades of GOP hate-chickens come home to roost, they suddenly aren't happy with the party. Where was the outrage with George W Bush & his lies that led us into a war? Where was the outrage with Sarah Palin's racist rhetoric on the campaign trail in 2008? Where was the outrage when McConnell said his only goal was to make Obama a one-term president? These republicans were right there, supporting the party. Now they are upset that the likes of Trump has taken over their party, but the writing was on the wall a long time ago & they didn't care then. The dems should take note: when you get in bed with people who don't share your basic values, don't be surprised when they take over your party & then crap all over it.
If disgruntled republicans want to fight the fight against Trump, good! But don't do it by infiltrating the Democratic Party. Let them run as independents or some other third party.

(36,567 posts)Where are they going to go, all of these disgruntled republicans? I hope they vote dem, but run as indies. If they were okay with George W Bush, I don't want them in the party.

(765 posts)I wish he'd done more to stop his party's slide into this, however.
And that goes for all the "retiring" republican congress members, you chicken-shit cowardly fucks. Got yours & getting out now before the heat gets too hot, instead of doing the right thing & opposing this clusterfuck party of yours, even if it means losing your seat.

(4,220 posts)they can't come into our party unless they accept EVERYTHING the Democratic party stands for. No watering down our party for ex-Republicans.

(20,028 posts)Perhaps he was still too young and inexperienced 30 years ago to recognize that Ronald Reagan and his Republican Party were racist, just not as overtly as they are now.
Reagan's campaigns used racially coded rhetoric, making attacks on the "welfare state" and leveraging resentment towards affirmative action.[63][64] Dan Carter explains how "Reagan showed that he could use coded language with the best of them, lambasting welfare queens, busing, and affirmative action as the need arose".[65] During his 1976 and 1980 campaigns, Reagan employed stereotypes of welfare recipients, often invoking the case of a "welfare queen" with a large house and a Cadillac using multiple names to collect over $150,000 in tax-free income.

(1,402 posts)I would welcome Steve Schmidt into the Democratic Party. He can recognize the republican party has changed, thanks to Sarah Palin. If the Democratic Party changed as much as Reps have, I'd leave it, too.
