(68,825 posts)Given that the house is on fire...primarying sitting Democrats is a foolish waste of time and money. Save the money to go after Republican held seats...if we don't take the house, we are screwed. And if he is with John Lewis...good enough for me. Fuck you Susan, the day I listen to one word from your heartless brainless self is the day hell freezes over.

Why would we want to make the repug candidate's chances better?

(5,272 posts)elected. Since most of us see the danger of voting outside of the two-party system in the GE, this is the way things should be done in an effort to give us all a voice in who we elect. Sure, Sarandon has decided on numerous occasions not to support the democratic candidate in favor of a green party candidate. If she herself were up for election and you cited that as a reason for not voting for her, that would at least make a modicum of sense. But she is not the candidate in question here. To make up your mind on such a scant aspect of the whole is ridiculous.
And who says this makes the republicans chances better. There is no basis for that assertion. If Crowley is popular with his base he will win, if he is less popular than his challenger, then his challenger should probably be the one in the GE.

(35,454 posts)but any candidate of SS is not a candidate of mine
H2O Man
(73,709 posts)I would think issues involving the candidates should be the deciding factor, in both primary and general elections. I'll add that, in my humble opinion, those who would vote either for or against a candidate based solely upon what SS thinks are in the same boat, simply rowing in opposite directions. Maybe it's just me, but I do not consider her a factor in any way.
ThaT if SS is attracted to this candidate it sends up a red flag to me, especially considering the pattern of her endorsements in the past. My issue with Crowley is his lack of support for Nancy Pelosi, not a policy one though I think he should've shown up for the debate.
Is it equally important to consider who is supporting Crowley, in terms of financial contributions? For example, if corporations have a history of contributing to him, and those contributions have influenced his voting record?
Me.
(35,454 posts)H2O Man
(73,709 posts)(Which isn't surprising.)
Campaign financing is a huge issue for me. I prefer grass roots' financing, rather than corporations buying elections. It would seem to be something that our party should be focusing on. We need politicians who represent people, rather than corporations.

I'm not trying to defend Sarandon for anything, but it is essentially being played by her either way to automatically back or oppose anyone simply based on what Sarandon does.
Yes this is a primary against a Democratic incumbent, but it is also a very Democratic seat that we will not lose in November regardless of the primary outcome. If you like the incumbent by all means wire him some money,
brush
(53,978 posts)an incumbent Dem when that money and work could be spent helping a Dem win in a not so blue district?
Let's be clear and think clearly. Surandon backed Nader and trump once Sanders lost the primary.
The fact that Ocasio let that witch anywhere near his campaign shows a lack of good judgment.
Tom Rinaldo
(22,919 posts)The fact that you don't know that shows that you don't know much about this particular primary race, let alone Ocasio. "All that money and work" doesn't just sit inside some kind of joint checking account that can just as easily be drawn upon for some other Democratic race - Ocasio has local supporters who are motivated to back her specifically inside their own district.
By the way it is a myth that Sarandon ever actually backed Trump. However I definitely understand that her refusal to back Hillary in the General was helpful to Trump.
"Susan Sarandon set off a media firestorm last week by suggesting she'd vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.
The only problem: Sarandon, an avowed Bernie Sanders supporter, never actually said she'd support Trump."

(1,028 posts)C'mon, you have to realize that Sarandon is not popular with Democrats based on her hostility towards the party.
Nader was one thing, Trump is a whole other.

(22,919 posts)It is not that far fetched that she could endorse Harris in 2020.
List of 2008 Obama endorsers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Barack_Obama_presidential_campaign_endorsements,_2008
She was critical of, but still supported, Obama in 2012 as well:
"Current TV host Joy Behar asked the outspoken liberal actress for her take on the leaked Romney footage from a May fundraiser in which he says that "47 percent" of the electorate is "dependent upon government" and will vote for President Barack Obama "no matter what."
https://www.politico.com/blogs/click/2012/09/susan-sarandon-mitt-romneys-so-entertaining-135943
Again, as I wrote originally, I am not defending her or her actions. But it is crazy to simply vote against everyone who she votes for.

(22,919 posts)Strictly in primaries of course, not running against a Democrat in the general....
Right now we have a functional one party system - the Democratic Party, Republicans do not offer a functional alternative for sane people. I do not believe that incumbency equates with a free pass to be nominated for life inside a safely Democratic district. In my own county our Democratic Party at convention just chose not to renominate our sitting Democratic Sheriff for reelection by a vote o f85 to 15%. He is forcing a primary fight as is his right.

(1,028 posts)It's pretty much expected that Crowley will win.
What's going good for her is that turnout will most likely be low as this is a very blue district that will stay blue, and the WFP is good at getting out their vote.
brooklynite
(95,012 posts)...unless they're seen as being close. I will observe that Crowley has 10x cash on hand, which suggests a more robust ground game is likely.
