I remember a discussion I had with a couple of Nixon supporters in 1972 or '73...

It was in a small neighborhood grocery store. Somehow the conversation got on to politics and I suggested to them that the Watergate break-in was done by the CIA and that Richard Nixon knew all about it. They laughed.

I will never forget how they ridiculed what I was telling them. They thought I was just a crazy Democrat. Everything that we discussed turned out to be true. They were still laughing when I left the store.

The attitude of a lot of Republicans in 1973 was very much like the attitude of Republicans in 2018. They believed nothing until it happened, and even then, many still did not believe that Richard Nixon would ever do anything criminal.

I see a lot of parallels today.

Additionally, most Republicans in Congress supported Nixon until the tapes came out...

However, there are two big differences:

1) There was no Fox News around at the time - the news was generally balanced. And, RW talk radio didn't dominate the airwaves like it does today.

2) In 1973, Democrats had solid majorities in both the House and the Senate. I believe the House majority was a bit more than what Republics have now, despite the huge landslide that Nixon won in 1972, and Dems held the Senate with 56 or 57 seats, I believe.
