Should DU have a separate alert feature for news stories that aren't actually true?

I'm not talking about The Onion or Borowitz or some of our homegrown satire*, and I'm not talking about disruptors posting obvious right wing trash, but rather news stories of dubious origin that we want to believe are true because they might present things in a positive light, but aren't actually supported by the fact?

Instead of automatically deleting or punishing the poster (because we naturally all want to believe certain things even before determining whether or not they are true), perhaps a PM can be sent to the poster instructing them to either self-delete, or if the source was actually a parody/satire site but didn't convey the satirical nature very well, the poster can edit add that fact?

Several times I've seen stories that favor our point of view but are not actually true and yet are presented as true, and people get overly excited and start reccing a false news story and soon it's at the top of the greatest page. That sort of backfires on our credibility.

*For more about homegrown satire, we'll give you details at eleven!

we have our own watchdog group here on DU. I was just overly excited about the ICC Netherlands thread.

No pm necessary, imo. People who post those kinds of links (the fake news ones) are informed via a response to their OP and often refuse to delete it. The admins have advised numerous times to alert for "No kooky, extremist, or hate content," but the alert often fails.

(I also can't stand when people link to content farms instead of a more credible source. E.g. "Blasting News" )

Something that people can check when posting while adding an alert button for when unrealized satire is discovered, like the Netherlands post.

So much flies by so fast. I'm totally for satire but I think we need some clearer lines here about what is and what isn't, because reality is taking a beating. It should be just a simple prefix addition for any thread.

There's just so much satire that's believable that we need to make it clear what really is and isn't less we become as gullible as those we used to mock.

I have no expectations of anything being done since the ownership of the site is largely absent these last few months.

It still astonishes me how people here believe fake news in a heartbeat. Pathetic.

You'd spend your time getting alerts and appeals from partisans and having to make decisions which piss someone off.

I mean, it's not as if people queue up to be hosts already, is it? We have to judge the reliability of sources for LBN, and very few people are willing to put the effort in for that.

I think you overestimate the credibility of GD, frankly.
