I have lived most of my life in Greater Miami, Greater Orlando, and now Greater Los Angeles, all areas with large Hispanic populations. When I was in college I was the only non-Hispanic in an all Hispanic study group. I should add they all went on to be successful, more successful than me, with many becoming lawyers.
My mom's doctor who became my friend was from Puerto Rico gave me his cell phone number should I need to contact him immediately, and treated me for free when I lost my health insurance and contacted walking pneumonia. What doctor does that? When I was growing up my best friend was half Puerto Rican, one quarter Cuban and one quarter Irish.
They are warm people. They are kind people. They are entrepreneurial.
Why do Deplorables dislike them ?

My answer? They are just Deplorable - That's why
I don't want to Hijack your thread - I suppose only a Deplorable could answer the question and my guess is there would not be a rational answer.

A lot of Middle-class white people who are deplorables - exclusionary, show off and entitled.
Deplorables could be jealous - look how upset they get upon hearing other languages. Jealous of people being bilingual and therefore smarter. Also, they need somebody to feel superior too - and they realize black people no longer will do, as there are black leaders, presidents, talented athletes, musicians. Hispanic people appear to be not born in Amurka and now they can be superior over that!

(7,411 posts)In the early days Hispanic immigrants were somewhat overlooked and their own communities urged assimilation into the American culture as a practical necessity. As a voting block they were often conservative, especially the anti-Castro Cubans. Ybor City, for example, was a wonderful place to visit....Silver Ring, Columbia Restaurant, La Tropicana and many other mom and pop places that only the locals and cops on the night shift knew about. Miami must have been wonderful if one wanted great food and rich culture, although I never lived there.
At some point, Repubs realized that the newer refugees/immigrants were a bit more liberal minded.
Once the conservative wave of immigrants changed it was an entirely new ballgame.
The trickle soon became a flood. Entire neighborhoods changed. Finally, white conservatives realized that the genie was out of the bottle and have been trying to re-cork it at every place immigration takes place.....except for Norwegians.

(99,719 posts)When I was in college in the 80s most of my Cuban friends were liberal, already casting off the conservatism of their parents.

(5,141 posts)That is often true of many immigrants - The ones that come initially. Are often conservative. The children of the immigrants - myself that assimilate tend to become liberal- My parents are more conservative - The newer generations tend to be more liberal than the older generations. Not always.
Its interesting because I don't think the Republican party understands if they were not so damn racist they could attract a lot more immigrants and even blacks because so many come from religious patriarchal societies. But their racism prevents so many from being a part of their party

(5,798 posts)The immediate post-Castro Cubans in Little Havana were exactly what you describe in In or City. When Mariel happened, different story. That was truly an instance where Castro emptied prisons, and the sheer numbers were overwhelming. Anglo flight north soon ensued.

(10,252 posts)many grew up in homes and were taught that non-whites are lazy welfare people, liars, rapists, low IQ. Some have a long-time habit of mentally nurturing hatred for the "other" and blaming the "other" for their own unhappy, unfulfilled lives. I assure you that haters are not happy people. It's very sad that these haters could so easily become happier people, simply by abandoning hateful thoughtsand practicing loving kindness towards others.

You said it yourself. All your study group friends went on to be successful. The rural white male republican voter can always be understood if you remember that their greatest fear is their own inferiority.

who keep to their own communities and don't always speak English (just not speaking English is enough to cause rage in some people); most of those who are undocumented work at low-prestige, low-skilled jobs like farm and construction labor, hotel maids and dishwashers (that the haters would not take themselves and without which the economy would collapse); and even those who are documented or U.S.-born aren't "white" enough. It's a group of people that's easily scapegoated. There's no rational reason for such hate but racial hate isn't rational anyhow. Ignorant people like Trump's fans are easy to frighten with stories of how dangerous the "other" is and how those people are harming the country.
It's so much like Germany in the '30s that it scares me. It's not identical, of course - until the early '30s Jews were in many respects more assimilated, having lived in Germany for a long time - and many were successful, respected academics, scientists and business people. But they were members of a clearly identifiable community, since although they were racially "white" they could be identified by their names and neighborhoods. Germany had been badly defeated in WWI and its economy was in terrible shape. Hitler needed a scapegoat group for people to fear so they would unite behind him, so he blamed the Jews, especially those in the banking industry, for Germany's financial problems, even though they were less than 1% of the total population. Beginning in 1933, the German government enacted a series of anti-Jewish laws restricting the rights of Jews to earn a living, to be citizens and obtain an education. These laws resulted in the exclusion of Jews from German social and political life. And we all know what happened after that.
After Trump stooped so low as to put Latino babies in cages I now have no doubt he would try get anti-Latino laws passed like Hitler's ant-Jewish laws. And he'd do it to get the lowest sort of people behind him.

.new moms..80% undocumented. My gosh! If there's ever a zombie Apocalypse I want to bunk with these women. They grew an entire garden to feed their family along the mostly shady side of their small rentals. Their house was spotless! Many were working hard in the fields at 8 mos pregnant! The kids were happy and thrived in what I would consider very minimal conditions...because the parents were happy. The thing is they were so GRATEFUL for being in America.. because even our dirt floor migrant camps were better than what they left.
We all need to relive that feeling again.

(1,117 posts)Two reasons why deplorables hate Hispanics.
First, Republican leaders about 30 years ago embraced identity politics to get votes for billionaires. (During this time they used dogwhistles to hide their support for identity politics.) And that meant they had to identify wedge issues to divide America to get their voters to vote for tax cuts. Xenophobia has always been an effective wedge issue. Humans are tribal.
Second, more recently Republicans have realized their only path to retaining power is via massive voter suppression. In 2012 post Romney, Republican analysis revealed that demographics was going to eventually finish them, as white people eventually became a majority in America. That analysis concluded the GOP needed to court Hispanics. But after Trump was openly racist and took over the propragandized base the GOP had prepared (via dogwhistles, see point one), Republicans could no longer court centrists and Hispanics. So in the past two years Republican leadership has decided they can square this circle via ethnic cleansing. The leadership likes the ethnic cleansing because it removes D voters. The base likes it for the racism.
Those are the two reasons deplorables hate Hispanics. For those two reasons the right wing propaganda machine has been preaching Hispanic hate for years. And the deplorables are brainwashed by the propaganda: Fox, Limbaugh, Hewitt, Drudge, etc.

For a few years I lived in a Brazilian neighborhood in Elizabeth, NJ. The greatest people you would ever want to meet. And the food was fabulous.
Within walking distance was Newark's Ironbound, named for the triangle of train tracks that made its border. It was historically a neighborhood of immigrants, and the latest were South American.
The Argentinian food and festivals were even more amazing.
Doctors, lawyers, scholars, business owners-- Spanish influence in the US is overall positive and a lot more than tacos.

(5,798 posts)That breaks into two subissues:
The perception that Latino immigrants don't assimilate: anti-Latino-immagant types resent: hearing Spanish spoken in supermarkets; Spanish language choices on phone menus, ATMs, etc.; the multiple Latino media outlets. It doesn't jibe with the "my great Grandparents learned English" narrative. Note that Latino immigrants who have fully assimilated are not immune from this mindset.
The perception that the Spanish costs English speakers jobs: After Mariel, a popular T shirt in South Florida was "Will the last American to leave Miami please bring the flag?" It was, in part, a reflection that many low jobs were now "Bilingual English/Spanish preferred." Many Anglos felt alienated that the language they grew up speaking was no longer good enough to get hired. In Fremont NE, laws requiring renters to prove citizenship were passed after a long time Hormel employee complained to a city councilman that he was passed over for a supervisory position because (he claimed) he did not speak Spanish.
