(81,612 posts)Hillary to be "too sneaky." Which I don't understand, just by itself.
I had to text her back: "Sneaky is refusing to release one's tax returns and then lying about the reason why."

(81,612 posts)Silence.
This is the same friend who insisted last year - INSISTED! - that the three MASSIVE hurricanes in a row, the ones that came one right after the other last year - had NOTHING to do with Climate Change! She texted me that all in caps.
After I collected myself a little, I texted her back. Paraphrasing here: " Name), I'm a member of the local Indivisible group. As such, I hang out with climatologists and oceanographers, one of whom is quite prominent and lectures at USC, AND a project manager at JPL. Science nerds and wonks. You CANNOT tell me that these 'one-in-a-thousand-years' hurricanes, as they're being called - coming RIGHT IN A ROW in the same season, have 'nothing to do with Climate Change'. You just CAN'T."
Her response was total silence.
I interpret that as meaning she had no comeback for that.
I have tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried and tried with this gal. She had another version of that recently, when she tried to convince me that whatever-number-of-mass-shooting it was that day had "NOTHING to do with guns."
I'm still friends with her, but at this rate, I just don't know how long I can deal with this anymore. I don't know if our friendship will survive this. She's a determined republi-CON. Lately she's texted me about how awful Bill Clinton is. Although she does hate what's going on at the border - with children and babies in cages. Which she insists is partly President Obama's doing. This gal is messed up. And so far, she's unreachable.
I still believe souls can be saved, even hers. Because I have a deep and long-running affection for her. We've been friends for a long time. But every time I try to convince her that she's too kind and compassionate to stick with the GOP, she tells me she doesn't need saving.

(871 posts)I've been hanging out here for a little while, but don't post much because I don't have a lot of time. But I appreciate what you're saying. Friends are precious, and the ones who I have to love at a great distance because of our different world views are, in a way, more so. They remind me that I have to be compassionate with them and disciplined with myself. Even when I want so badly to shove their words down their throats!

(155 posts)I think of it this way. Some people are Romantics in that they make decisions based on their gut and heart. They look for solutions that feel good in their core. At the other end of the spectrum are the Enlightened who make their choices by weighing evidence and then deciding which course of action is best.
Most people have both aspects of these traits to some degree - few are only Romantic or only Enlightened. And it is important to remember that both tendencies have both positive and negatives: gut instincts are often right and over thinking can lead to dithering.
The problem we have now is that the GOP has for decades now cultivated an entire class of Romantic voters and demonized those who lean towards Enlightenment (elites). First they tell them that they should be afraid of just about everything (godless socialists, corrupt Democrats, brown skinned immigrants, gays who insist on buying your wedding cakes, and so on.) Then they provide the solution: we will look after you; nobody else can be entrusted with this sacred task. Voting for the GOP becomes a solemn duty.
Of course this is nonsense and sometimes reason creeps back in. When this happens they ramp up the fear and outrage at all the perceived enemies. "Just look at that horrible criminal Hilary Clinton! She needs to be in jail."
For Romantics this reinforces and justifies their original choice. If they were wrong about Trump then that means they can't trust their gut or heart which would be terrifying. They HAVE to believe or their make-believe world of their own righteousness collapses.
Trying to reason with these people is not only pointless but often backfires. Romantics simply process information and make decisions differently than the Enlightened. Apples and oranges. The Enlightened need to stop trying to "teach" and start figuring out how to rebuild trust and effective cooperation because the other side sure as hell isn't going to do it.

(81,612 posts)The friend I described above also insists that her conscience is clear, even after voting for trump. Because she REALLY voted for trump because of Mike Pence.
I fucking give up.

(1,640 posts)And the point isn't wasted on me, I assure you.
However, for many people the antipathy felt towards Clinton went beyond the hue and cry raised over her emails. Members of my own family firmly believe that Hillary Clinton had people killed and is thus culpable of murder.
Of course, there is far more compelling evidence to make that claim against Putin. But Trump approves of Putin, and for those who approve of Trump as the Anti-Hillary, that is enough reason to set aside their moral concerns of that particular politician's actions. Besides, it's not like Putin is murdering Americans, right?

(81,612 posts)I run into this time and time again with my own best friend. She insists she doesn't hate Hillary but then runs off at the mouth about how she couldn't possibly have voted for her because she's "sneaky"? Sneaky HOW???? I answered that with "Sneaky" is refusing to release your tax returns and lying about the reason why.

(1,640 posts)And the slamming head against brick wall emoji does capture some of the frustration I feel when I hear family members saying those sorts of things. Much of the time, a broken heart symbol would be more accurate.
There is so much kindness and decency that I see in my family, the way they can turn off their compassion for others who don't fit their Fox News standards of "worthiness" makes me want to cry.

(81,612 posts)Many are reminding him of how he lacerated Hillary during the campaign. He was no friend. (And now, of course, he's all holy and clean and we just need to forget about all that from the past... )
Some are holding him accountable on there.
Like it makes a damn bit of difference now...
