No presidency can survive hurting children. Trump, the man who knows nothing, made a fatal mistake. This mistake is not going to go away after a few days. It's going to go on and on. He always uses the same defense of putting on a fake show, lying, changing the subject, it will not work this time.
The only way Trump can fix this disaster is by pissing of his base. He won't do that. He will make things worse. Trump is a dead man walking.

Right-leaning indies are less committed overall.
Many conservative women are outraged and, as said, heartbroken, by child abuse.
Some Christian conservatives are very strongly opposed.
A lot of Hispanic trumpsters weren't nearly as enthusiastic about him as their white supremacist counterparts are before this.
The OP's right. We were doing well before Trump started kidnapping and abusing children for political benefit. And now! As an angry, humiliated Trump looks for ways to double down...

I tend to agree with you. This feels different. This one is NOT going away, in fact it appears to be getting worse by the day. It's gut-wrenching.

(7,768 posts)Sorry about all the questions but I'd like to find the video of that show if I can. Thanks!
Donnie is super passionate He is enraged right now. I've seen him in tears. He's known trump for years and he now HATES his guts. He says something is really wrong morally and especially MENTALLY with DJT.
Sometimes when he is on 'Morning Joe', he's gotten in trouble (Mika too!) and has had to be counseled by the producers to be careful about what he says.
John Heilemann is wicked smart! I really, really respect him and his perspective. (I'm so glad that puke Mark Halperin is out of the picture).

Ari Melber replaced the show. Donny was on Ari this week.
Joe is so jealous of Donny he is rude to him. Donny appears regularly on Nicole Wallace. A favorite of hers.

(10,854 posts)The celebration should be reserved for a roaring success in November. That being said, the Trumpster has definitely jumped the shark on this issue. But behind the curtain, the GOP monster-elves are busy at work undermining the fabric of the country with their quiet introduction of a bill to dismantle Medicare, Medicaid and reduce Social Security. They're also planning another take-down of the ACA, a halt to the Mueller investigation and the coming 'summit' with Pooty.
Time is short. Their work is never done.
Nor is ours.

(1,195 posts)What really concerns me is our vulnerability in votes not being counted on election day. What happens if Russia, North Korea or China hack into our voting apparatus? Or, shut down the electric grid on election day?
Is this why Trump is visiting Putin next month? To make sure things are being coordinated? Today's collusion?
peggysue2
(10,854 posts)I do not think this meeting with Putin is coincidental. We know the trolls and bots are swarming and the hacking/cyber-intrusion is a real threat. However, a 'wave' at the polls makes turning an election far more difficult than a close margin. That's why getting people off their couches and down to the polls is so important. As for a possible grid attack? That one's pretty much above our pay grade and out of our hands. We all need to stay focused on what we can do and do it x 1000.

(17,276 posts)I'm more relaxed and optimistic than I've been in a while. Reason: this catastrophe can not be wrapped up within a few news cycles. It's going to go on, and on, and on, and on...
It's easy and desirable for the media to cover this because it is human interest. Easy to understand. Emotionally gut wrenching. And it all points directly to the White House--not some band of segregationists in Charlottsville. Not some conservative lobbyists or corporate criminals. Not even credible reports by informants about the President. Nothing complicated.
The helpers are working to put this right--the NGOs, local mayors and governors and eventually they will. But at the federal level it is chaos and they actually like it that way.
Their reasoning is that if they create enough chaos, then a wall makes the best solution. It doesn't, but they think the American people will think that.
What will do it is a good, comprehensive immigration system. Something we have been needing for a very long time. Come on Congress--get it done!

There are some really intelligent writers on this forum, maybe a White Rose Society type of action may work. Have them write out essays about what terrors are taking place and we less fortunate writers could print out and distribute flyers or copy and paste to as many social forums as possible.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Rose
The White Rose (German: die Weiße Rose) was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany led by a group of students and a professor at the University of Munich. The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign which called for active opposition to the Nazi regime. Their activities started in Munich on 27 June 1942, and ended with the arrest of the core group by the Gestapo on 18 February 1943.[1] They, as well as other members and supporters of the group who carried on distributing the pamphlets, faced show trials by the Nazi People's Court (Volksgerichtshof), and many of them were sentenced to death or imprisonment.

(7,220 posts)The man who is President of the United States is on tape saying that. There are literally hundreds of horrendous, vile things he's said and done since then. He can lie with impunity as long as he never admits he's wrong. He mockingly blames everyone else for every real or perceived issue, including those he needlessly created because of his own stupidity and greed. His immigrant "genius" wife just returned from a staged kiddie prison photo-op wearing a "Don't really care" jacket. Corey Lewandowski "womp-womped" on live TV to a 10-year old Down's syndrome girl who was separated from her mother by the policies of the Trump administration.
Trump supporters are "womp-womping" America and the world. What could he possibly do to piss them off?

(23,996 posts)the conversation has moved on from "is building a border wall a good idea?" to "if we give you money for the wall, will you stop kidnapping children?" this is a significant shift that has gone under-reported, along with fresh GOP plans to gut Medicare and Medicaid.
i think this is by design
the signalling to his base is clear: very soon they'll be able to physically purge Hispanics from society, but not just yet. patience.
meanwhile, the Republicans are circling the wagons to prop up and protect their favorite demagogue
the unthinkable has become debatable. things that would have led directly to impeachment of a president of either party are now open to further consideration. those who discard the significance of this shift now will be very surprised in November. and yes, i'll be happy to eat my words if the "Blue Wave" actually happens.

(14,565 posts)It is incredibly foolish to believe that. I'm convinced anyone who does believe that simply doesn't have any right wing friends or acquaintances. The word swoon was used earlier in this thread. That is absolutely correct regarding how white Republican American views Donald Trump.
His approval rating has been climbing and will not drop sharply, if at all, due to this topic. The Happy Adjusters are the most incompetent group of forecasters on the planet. That is the type who takes the latest bit of information and overreacts to comical extreme. I'm seen that group recently proposing Trump's approval back down to 30% range if not lower.
It took a string of outrageous acts and comments to lower Trump's approval to the mid to low 30s sustained for much of last year. There is nothing similar currently. Oh, his actions and words may be similar caliber but it was always guaranteed that the nation would come to be more accepting of that type of thing, as long as prosperity holds. I warned about that early in 2017. Trump happened to inherit an Obama economy ready to take off.
Once we had a stretch without a Charlottesville type of situation, along with economic confidence building among all income brackets, many people have simply changed their mind about Donald Trump toward accepting if not positive. They aren't going to tilt fully the other away again simply due to this immigration issue. First term presidents whose party did not hold the White House in the prior term receive immense benefit of a doubt.
Trump's approval will hold in the low 40s, even after this border issue is fully baked into the national mood.
