Where Is Obama?

June 25, 2018 at 8:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

New York Magazine: “Beyond the anguish is, often, simply bafflement: How did the most ubiquitous man in America for eight years virtually disappear? Over the course of his presidency, Obama cast himself as the country’s secular minister as much as its commander-in-chief, someone who understood the moral core of the nation and felt compelled to insist that we live up to it. What explains his near absence from the political stage, where he might argue publicly against the reversals of his policy accomplishments, and also from American life more broadly?”

“What is keeping him from speaking more frequently about the need to protect democratic norms and the rule of law, to be decent people? Where is the man who cried after Sandy Hook and sang in Charleston, who after each mass shooting tried to soothe an outraged nation, who spoke of American values in his travels across the globe? And, tactically, what is behind the relative silence of one of the most popular figures alive just as American politics appears to so many to be on the brink of breaking?”

Warned and warned. People were into their own lives and thought democracy can run on autopilot.

Now those apathy voters might have to learn how their government touches their life daily. Sucks to be them cause reading. Republicans who work in factories, or on farms and possible need those food stamps are gonna have to think bigger then vitamin D for their skin. Sucks to be them, cause it was so much simpler to hate with your eyes.

Obama is fine, and rich and every democracy in the world would open their borders for him and his family, and be proud. Electing Trump didn't hurt Obama,he's fine. Historically, he's looking better daily. While I wish, personally for him to help ME guide my family through this time in my history, I understand he did his job, his time with honor. I just hope my regular, unrich family doesn't become a victim to this stupidity.

It's tradition that former President's don't critique the sitting President.

It's been mentioned though that President Obama will be an active voice in the 2018 elections.

This article - perfectly sums up how I feel about it [link:https://www.theroot.com/obama-doesn-t-owe-this-country-shit-1826309455|
There is this thing white people do where they invoke Obama’s name and say he is the one who needsto come forward and speak out against Donald Trump. He is the one who needs to condemn the things Trump is doing. He is the one who needs to save us from a demise of our own making. Why?

The Obamas suffered enough damn abuse - They deserve some respite. We don't know what kind of work they are doing behind the scenes either. And again he is not your magical negro and I find it quite offensive that people think he needs to be.

past presidents are observing from a distance and will step in at the right time, as a unit, using what's left of their collective mandates to defend and guide the country out of the inevitable crisis that will come when Mueller drops the hammer.

The historian suggested that they can only step into that role if they've been somewhat silent and distant from the situation.

That tradition says that former Presidents do not publicly criticize the sitting President.

However, President Obama is working behind the scenes. You can expect to hear from him in the midterm election campaigns, though strong endorsements of candidates. That's what former Presidents do.

and I wouldn't be surprised if he just said; "fuck you all".

AN honorable, intelligent, decent, caring, compassionate man, who saved this country from the brink of economic collapse and delivered the most progressive agenda I had seen in my lifetime, was rewarded by the election of a racist, orange assclown and a majority assclown House and Senate.

Some fucking ignorant shits even thought; "hell, why vote for the candidate Obama wants to replace him, when I can vote for some Green Party Russian Troll".

It took two fucking years for folks to "turn their back on Obama". Now, some want him to ride in on a white horse and save the little children from kidnapping...or worse?

I wouldn't blame President Obama if he just said; "go fuck yourselves"

He mentioned that some of his reticence is traditional, some is that he is busy on long-range progressive plans and projects, some is that he wants new Democratic leadership to speak up, and some is that Obama does not want to be a lightening rod used to organize the trumpanistas.

It made sense to me, and besides, I never hear anyone politically active in my area, ask "Where is Obama?".

The three cycles:

1. "Where are Hillary and/or Obama? They have a obligation to be upfront and center and actually say something during Trump's latest disaster!"

2. "Hillary and/or Obama are charging HOW much for a speech again? Hillary and/or Obama still won't say the word 'impeachment' yet? What a couple of corporate sellouts!! Well, appearance fees aside it was a great speech but Hillary and/or Obama really messed up by not mentioning 'G' when they mentioned A-B-C-D-E-F... Not quite the rousing speech/interview I was hoping for..."

3. "Why are Hillary and/or Obama always whoring for the spotlight? Why does everything in the Dem world have to revolve around *THEM*?? They're taking media attention away from deserving Dem candidates running in '18, '19 and '20! You know, the Dems who actually have a chance to run and *DO* something..Hillary and/or Obama need to go back to laying low and living in the shadows..."

That's what it would become, if an ex-President broke tradition and behaved the way some might like.

But suppose he DID speak out. Whose opinion would he change? No ones. The Dems already agree with him and the R's hate him. There's virtually no one in between anymore.

Tue Jun 26, 2018, 12:00 PM
Jun 2018

He worked his ass off in 2016 to defeat Trump. He invested more energy and time into beating Trump than any sitting president has in an election they weren't directly running. It's not even close. Bush was absent in 2008. Clinton was using sparingly in 2000. Reagan was trotted out only marginally during the '88 campaign.

No president fought as hard as Obama did for an election of someone else and he lost. He said, "vote to preserve my legacy" and people in states like Ohio, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, states he won in his elections, turned around and voted for Trump.

Frankly, if I was him, I'd step aside too. Everything he said would happen - has. If they didn't listen to Obama in 2016, what makes you think they'll listen to him in 2018?
