Why I Watch Morning Joe

This is a bit of an updated response I posted elsewhere today but the question comes up regularly.

First; I didn't care for Cuomo's approach to things when he was on in the morning. I have no idea who's on now that he moved later but CNN's approach bugs me every time I see them. Prior to the election I used to just watch GMA but it's turned so light and empty over the years that I gave up. I miss David and Joan from the 80's.

second; I wanted to get a look at how a 90's conservative was viewing the events going on as they happened. I've got a ton of ways to know what my own party is doing and my own representatives as well as a slew of hosts and pundits on the left.

third; There are some interesting people that are on regularly, such as John Meachem and Admiral Stavaris, that provides for some solid context to situations that you don't get on some other programs.

fourth; I like to listen to the sides that I don't agree with and place my views against it to see where I can find agreement and work from there.

fifth; I hate the groupthink that happens here in telling people that all things must be our way all the time. That's not how any of this works, from news to books to TV shows and movies and so forth. We're all coming from different walks of life and have to meet in the commons to be able to understand each other and move it forward.

sixth; it seems to set some people into a minor rage that people do watch so there's some enjoyment with that.

I could easily add a few others as well. It's engaging watching how a "classic" modern conservative like Joe gets enraged over certain things in a way that you would never imagine happening when his party has control of all three branches. I'm appreciative that they're not in lockstep as they've been for years on a lot of subjects, especially when those in power in his party in the house and senate are so goddamn quiet. Yeah, he may say "Back when I was in the house" too often for a lot of people but that's not a view you're seeing on the pundit level anywhere else for the most part.

Does that work for an answer?

all that ever happens are responses like: “Fuck them!” “Joe’s a repug!” “Stop watching Morning Joe!”

I think they have excellent guests and interesting discussions.

but it's just a waste of time on their part. They're screaming into the void and I suppose it helps.

The guests can be a mixed bag sometimes but there are those that I like such as Meachem, Stavaris, some of the editorial writers from the Washington Post.

The discussions can definitely be interesting though Joe is the weak link for me because of his style of talking/moderating it. Things run a bit smoother with Mika but she's on a furious streak with the kids this week so it becomes more monologueing than anything else.

BUT -- I am so enjoying his perpetual facial expression of depressed glumness (in contrast to his previous sarcastic attitude of superiority) in light of what his party is now doing. Also, it seems that Mika is being allowed to speak up and assume at least a third of the talking time.

like she was. We've seen that in a lot of areas in that they just expected her to win. And they were kinda fine with that since they'd have four more years of someone to attack, which is easier than governing.

Joe's just kind of lost by how far the party has turned, which it had done for the past decade, from the days of Reagan. Which weren't great in the slightest but they're idolized in his eyes so it's understandable.

As Trump is gone I'll stop watching it. He's already in the tank for Nicki Haley, as is she's some prize.

And KC/DC with her defending Paul Ryan is sickening. "He got caught flat footed", as if that's an excuse for the Speaker of the House to sell out America.

I mostly ignore him, but do find many of the guests interesting and well-informed. Admiral Stavaris is one of my favorites also. What I mostly appreciate is the generous dose of international news and variety of opinions.

Mike Barnacle is interesting. Many times after Joe spends way too long trying to prove what a regular guy he is, Mike brings everyone back down to earth with a story about a soldier he knows who is on his umpteenth deployment. When he can get a word in edgewise, Mike wonders out loud about why in hell we have to discuss Trump's tweets 24/7 when there are so many important issues we should be talking about.

I'm with Mike. Enough of Melania's green jacket and Sarah Sander's restaurant fiasco. What's happening in Syria? Anybody been to Flint, Michigan lately? How are the folks in Puerto Rico doing?

But I know that's just me. He does bring in the humanizing "grandpa" element to some degree but with the added length of experience, etc that comes with age.

We do get some competing ideas and views though most, naturally, are kind of deferential to Joe in the end which kind of curtails discussion a bit. I think we get more interesting stuff when he's not there.

That said, I'll admit I love when they diverge to talk Star Wars a bit because you see just how into it they get. It's definitely interesting.

Two minutes of sleep-inducing talking points from one side, then Howard twists his mouth up and let's loose with some unexpected zinger.....usually not in Beltway Lingo.

Being deferential to Joe is as standard as the commercial breaks. It's such a joyous occasion when a guest interrupts one of Joe's anti "East Coast Liberal" mantras and shines some real light on the set.

I really miss Mika's father's sage advice, though.

I mostly just check in the opening 30-40 minutes or so with fast forwarding when I have breakfast and catch up with my mother. It's our politics moment of sanity, being thankful again that my father is no longer with us in a way as we know he'd be a raging Trumpaholic.
