(to be clear, I fully support these people being kicked out of the restaurants, etc. Just doing a little thought experiment here)
Picture this:
Instead of being asked to leave
a) all music etc is shut off
b) everyone stands and surrounds the table in complete silence - waiters, owners, patrons.
No smiles, no grins, not a word. Complete silence. Staring. Silently. Blankly. With every eye watching every bite. Every sip of wine. Listening to every comment, every burp.
I know that I couldn't stand such "attention". Not for more than a minute or two. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
Just thinkin'.

(42,862 posts)... why would I want to put myself in harm's way being witness to this type of standoff? Why would I want to have no service while the rest of the staff were busy harassing (intimidating) others? --- Best to just turn them away at the door.

(20,573 posts)It could probably never happen in real life. I just know that I personally couldn't withstand such a scene and would be gone as soon as I saw what was happening.

(46,166 posts)Working in social services I made home visits for decades. One time I visited a very large family. I sat on the sofa and every man, woman and child sat all around me and gave me their full attention. There were at least a dozen people in the room. It was a thing of respect. I was visiting and they were paying attention to me.
At first I didn't really notice. But then when I realized that I had about a dozen pairs of eyes on me my palms broke out in a sweat. Swear to god. There was nothing threatening about anyone. But the attention was unnerving at first. Then I got a grip and forgot about it and it was a very pleasant visit as was my usual experience on the job.
So, you're right about the attention. I don't know if it could ever be pulled off given timing etc with members of our government. The logistics are tough. But you're right about giving people so much attention and silent, to boot. At my home visit there was conversation. Your scenario of silence would frightening.
